Has people know hazel has suffered with dental issues since she was about a year old she is now 7 and a half. I’m struggling with her weight in July she had a dental her eye hasn’t stop running. The vet thinks it’s a ingrowing root. Which I know the only options is make her comfortable. She’s been active until the last day or so she looks tried and her teeth are grinding it hasn’t stop her from drinking etc and eating, it’s just her weight continues to drop slowly she is currently 183g she’s never been a heavy degu I think she heavies she been is about 240g, due to her dental issues and her old age I know they lost weight that too. She’s having cc with peanut better but she doesn’t eat a lot. She isn’t on any painkillers but I’m gonna ring the vet tomorrow and ask if hazel can be put on them. Any advice is appreciated or weight graining suggestions etc thank you it’s very stressing.

I would just keep trying different foods, and keep offering Critical Care. Maybe you could try Supreme Recovery plus as a change to the CC, or maybe you already have. I think I mentioned Rosewood Naturals Herbs plus mix as a tempting mix for oldies before, it's not the healthiest, but it's more important that they eat when they get to Hazel's age, and my oldies liked this mix.
Keep her comfortably warm - I know you do this already.
Was she on Metacam painkiller for a while before? You are doing the right think getting the vet to get her on metacam anyway, find a dose that works and then keep her on that permanently. Hopefully this might improve her eating a little.

I agree that calories are more important at Hazels age, so let her have what she'll eat.
I know metacam helped Little Amber when she had dental issues and I don't think a daily painkiller will do her any harm. If it improves her quality of life, it has to be a good thing.

Hey guys thank you for replying I spoke to the vet about painkillers, they won’t prescribe them until she’s had a dental. I didn’t want to because it her age and weight and the fact if she loses more weight because of her dental… they are now always got a heat pad I brought a electric one( savvy recommend they love it) She’s books in for Thursday morning x I’ll have a look at this rosewood stuff x

Good to hear that they like their heat pad. Degus tend to really love lounging on them. Just make sure that there is no way for them to touch the wires.

Good that they got taken care of. Luckily the pissed-offness is temporary, but the relief is long-term.

She was taken away from the electric heatpad for a day, its going to take her a while to forgive you.
Good call on getting her to the vet for a dental, sounds like she needed one.

Will the vet give you painkillers to try longer term now they've seen her?

She will most likely take a little while to get over the dental.

I wonder if it's an abscess, I would get her to the vet tomorrow to have it looked at.

That's what I was thinking. Dental abscesses are quite common if there's molar root overgrowth.
Just make sure she's eating and drinking OK, then ring the vet in the morning. She's on antibiotics and painkillers so that should help her cope.

It's worth pushing the vet for long-term pain relief if she also has ingrown roots. All of my dental goos were on a metacam regiment with no problems.
