I haven't talked to them about it yet. I did bring it up once, but they seemed to think I was comparing his eyes and just seeing he had mild cataracts in both eyes. I wanted to compile pictures to really demonstrate whats been happening before bringing it up again.
If they think its a good idea, I would definitely be intrigued to try this with two of my other goos who have diabetic cataracts.
I don't see any blood, which is great! I think the last time I saw any was the last day or so of the drops?

ROFL!! Benadryl flavored sunflower seeds! His eye looks really good!! Round and bright and full of life.
How goes the Benadryl treatments? Have you used it, and does it seem to be helping? EDIT: Found your other post and sounds like things are going much better!!

He's looking very good and enjoying his treats. Certainly a big improvement over the last pictures.

He's such a happy camper! And he'll do anything for sunflower seeds.
Thanks all for taking a look, its very helpful to have others to tell me I'm not just seeing things!
Edit: if fuzzier is not a word, I vote we make it one!

The reflections in the eye on the middle pic look a bit odd - there is a pinpoint sharp reflection and then a fuzzier one above and to the left. I wonder if that is just a fuzzier light source being reflected or something about the eye or cataract making that reflection look fuzzier. (Did I say fuzzier enough times, is it even a word?) I think he's gone a longer spell now without the eye filling up again, touch wood, so let's hope there has been an improvement in the cause. Great to hear he is doing well in any case

AH! I see what you are referring to, Molettuek. There could still be a cataract present, but thinner?

Thats what I'm thinking too--perhaps just not as mature of a cataract?

Nothing like it used to be, that's for sure.

Reviving this thread! Because of all ironies, I've just discovered that Newt (Picketts brother) now has a red eye in place of a minor cataract! And just like last time, it's on the same day as a vet appointment He's acting completely normal, no squinting or anything. I'll monitor and see if/how the blood drains. I have to go back to the vet on Friday for Tom, may see if another appointment opened up or if they can provide the steroid eye drops. I doubt it, but probably worth an ask. I'm hoping this resolves on its own, but I'm not too worried at the moment (probably not the correct approach). I'll continue to keep a close eye on him.

Hopefully this will resolve OK like last time! Weird for it to happen again. I think your goos are desperate to feature in a degu health book, and are trying to outdo each other to be the star.

Yeah, its really weird! And I wonder if this issue is genetic? It's only (so far) happened with those two brothers.
Ugh. Yep, that's 100% what it feels like! It would be wonderful if they would stop trying to one up each other!
Newts eye looked a little better as of this morning! Maybe slightly more red tonight, but perhaps because the blood is draining to one area.

Makes you wonder if there is a genetic component since it's not a very common thing.

Definitely wondering that! I'll have to see if there's research on this in other mammals.
His eye looked much clearer yesterday, but its quite a bit more red again today. Picketts was very cyclical as well, even during treatment with the dexamethasone (steroid eye drops). I'll continue to keep a close watch, I'm not seeing any change in activity or weight yet.

Well, looked good again last night but this morning is rough. I'll see if I can get eye drops from the vet, though they'll most likely want me to bring him in.
Picketts was very very cyclical as well, even on the meds. Was doing some reading online and it sounds like these conditions often take 2-3 weeks to resolve? Corticosteroid eye drops can help, but I think it's mainly waiting as the bleed clears.
Edit: can't give me eye drops since they haven't seen him for this before (understandable). I now have an appointment on the 19th. I know it's pretty far out, but it's the soonest they had with his vet. The tech didn't sound like she wanted him in immediately, but if it gets worse I'll see if I can get him in sooner. Hoping this will resolve by then.

Are either of them diabetic? I'm just remembering a diabetic colleague a few years ago who used to have bleeds into her eyes that were diabetic related.

They both have cataracts. I did see that this occurs more often in diabetics. I have the urinalysis strips, I can check tonight.

This is Newt's Eye today (also included a pic of his right eye with cataract). I also included an earlier picture where I definitely saw blood in his eye (orange squirrel pillow in background). photos.app.goo.gl/ScFumJseiRGtnRtS8I'm not seeing any redness? It's been like this since Wednesday night, maybe earlier. I have an appointment Monday morning, not sure if I should bring him in or not.

I can see a slight brown tinge, but I can't remember if that's normal, sorry, not very helpful. If you are happy with progress and think it's very similar to progress last time with the steroids, then there's probably not much to gain from the appointment. You could always defer the appointment for 10 days or so, so you keep the safety net.
