That does sound pretty weird. If it comes and goes, then that would indeed mean that blood is draining, but also bleeding into the eye again. So it sounds like there might be some sort of a constant (or re-occurring?) bleeding going on in his eye. I'm not sure what would cause that, but obviously having constant bleeding is not great, since that means something isn't healing right. I would recommend calling the vet at least. They've seen the eye already, and it's possible they might have something to say just from the description.

Right, it does seem really weird! But then again, I'm not sure how these things normally heal.
They didn't have me bring him in yet, but they might after this.
I wonder if I should restrict activity. He still gets play time every other day, and his eye seems to look fine on days after play time. So maybe the opposite, he can safely wear himself out in the play area? I'm probably over thinking this.

I would speak to the vet again, it's probably going to be worth taking him in because I think you need to know what might be going on for your own peace of mind, even if it's unlikely the vet will be able to do much.
I wouldn't restrict his activity or change anything without strong suspicion that something is making it worse.

Just heard back from the vet, the earliest they can get him in is Thursday. I'll keep monitoring until then, and if it gets worse or I see signs of pain I'll call in again for an emergency appointment.

Well, eye is draining again! Blood is pooled only in the bottom third (maybe less?) of his eye.

Rather weird, but luckily it does sound like things are generally under control and that this isn't very dangerous as such (considering that the amount of blood he's bleeding is realistically very small). I tried looking it up, and the normal reason for blood to pool in the eye is simply a broken blood vessel, which is apparently not very unusual (in animals and humans in general). It's making me think that maybe there is a weakened blood vessel in his eye that's repeatedly opening up? That seems like the simplest explanation.
I wonder if his cataract might have anything to do with it? I have no real idea, but maybe it's caused changes that would explain why blood vessels keep rupturing there?

I suppose it's good that it keeps resolving, it might just make it awkward to time a vet visit.

I do wonder if the cataract is playing a role here. I think one of the other posts I saw about this on the forum also mentioned that the goo had a cataract.
I was also trying to read up more on this, turns out 15-20% of humans with this get re-bleeding within a week or so. So maybe not too uncommon. And like you mention Teemu, at least its not a ton of blood!
So true Molette, they're going to think I'm crazy!

Update! Just got done speaking with the vet after she examined Pickett.
This was a heavier blood day, so she wasn't really able to even see the cataract or see any pupil/light reflex. We're going to try an eye drop that contains a steroid, see if we can bring the inflammation down. Might let the eye drain a bit better.
She mentioned next steps, so if he's showing signs of pain and the eye really swells surgery may have to happen. But hoping this helps resolve the issue!

Oh he HATES the eye drops! He actually nipped me (very gently) to demonstrate how much he did not appreciate this. And they smell strongly too, so no surprising him.

Yeah, you can't exactly hide eye drops in anything can you.

I wonder if they might sting a bit.
I really hope they will be a mighty help to him. And . . . Pickett . . . hang in there dude.

I take it the blood was preventing the vet really seeing what was going on, where it was coming from?
Is there a chance you startled him with the eyedrop, rather than it being painful? HOpe you can get them in ok.

Yep, that's exactly it Molette. His eye was pretty much entirely red yesterday, couldn't see the cataract at all, so I'm sure that made it difficult to see anything else. It is good to know that she didn't see any damage that indicated an infection though.
Just tried giving the drops again (3-4 times daily is the goal). Still very much unhappy. Its hard to keep him distracted while also getting him at the proper angle so I can actually get the drop in his eye.
I ended up getting several drops on me, and no full drops in his eye. But two partial, so I'm hoping that's ok at the moment. I know it's not ideal, but I did at least see him blinking rapidly, so some did get in there.

Oh no, 3-4 times a day is rough!! They should really provide 10x the quantity necessary and put it in a massive sprayer!

Hahaha, the visual of completely drenching poor Pickett with meds via a massive sprayer! Honestly may be the only way to guarantee he gets the right dose in his eye!
And yes 3-4 is not the easiest! But I guess it isn't 6-10? Oh no, I forgot how long I'm supposed to try this for and just checked the bottle---10 to 14 days!

ROFL!! That made me laugh! Thank you, Ladies! I needed that!
I hope he will become more accommodating as each day passes!

Excellent self talk there, hp, especially considering you just discovered how long the course is

Well, good news: Pickett and I have negotiated on the best way to give eye drops! He mostly tolerates them if copious amounts of sunflower seeds are offered after, haha!
Bad news ish: eye had drained, but new blood appeared on Saturday. His eye still looks blood red in places, but hopefully it will clear soon.
His last dose is on Thursday, so we'll see what it looks like then.

Let's hope it's just the last few troubles before the eye drops do their job! You're doing a good job sticking with it, and I'm sure Pickett will appreciate it, even if he's not keen on the medicine
