Scruffing is definitely not a good thing (Molly and Vicky were both amazing, they had this magic secret way of holding Zoe where he'd just go limp and wouldn't argue with them, but I have not yet been able to recreate it). The vet that got fired from my local practice tried picking River's rear end up by his tail (one of her many malpractices...) Seriously? Not grabbing a degu by the tail is like handling 101 for these guys! I mean accidents happen, but that was so intentional. I hate to see people fired, but that vet was seriously incompetent.

Ask the vet to give you 1mL syringes. Several, as once she works out there's good stuff in there you'll have a heck of a time keeping her from chewing the ends. Ask them to tell you in mL what dose she needs, rather than eyeballing it off the Loxicam syringe. As long as she's drinking plenty, it won't do too much harm (my exotics vets says regular vets are too cautious with painkillers in small furries due to lack of hard data) but too high a dose runs the risk of kidney damage, which would be hard to see until it's too late. So I definitely recommend 1mL syringes and getting the vet to say exactly what dose they'd like you to give and how often.

Evening all, Very happy as it's good news for Butters, not so good for my bank account but it's my fault for looking for a cheaper option. But looks like you get what you pay for (albeit a £40 difference). Live and learn.
She will need another dental, as Westover bodged her molars, the vet there said he would burr them but only clipped them, and has clipped them so that they are angled outwards so to speak, so the pointed part of the tooth is still rubbing on Butters tongue. Faye the vet at Tollbarn was great as I knew she would be, she even let us have a look through the camera into Butters mouth. And despite me telling the vet at Westover over the phone when Butters was under (when he rang hinting to put her down), to give her an antibiotic for the infection, which he said he would, he hasn't written them in his history notes Tollbarn received (which were very very vague) and the vet is under the impression he gave her nothing. He also left her bottom incisors still too long.
She is booked in for another op Monday, she has given us Baytril today, and has ordered some of the 'Lysine' critical care we had before that Butters will always take which we pick up tomorrow. She recommended fruit juice/squash to get the antibiotic into her as you did titchycatnipsandwich, we tried all sorts of flavours that I bought on the way back including Ribena, the little beast weren't having none of it *facepalm*. She has to be one of the fussiest degus! We managed to scrape the last of the 'lysine' critical care out of the packet and get her to take it that way.
I'm fuming with Westover vets, not only because they haven't done an adequate job of Butters teeth, but because me and my partner spent all weekend thinking she would be put down today, that there was nothing we could do with her. I didn't trust my instincts that the vet at Westover was not giving us his full cooperation and duty of care because I trusted him as a qualified vet. I'm so thankful I asked for your advice on Butters condition, thank you all! This is an amazing forum with great knowledgeable people. The only worry I have is other degu owners that take their beloved furries to see this vet and have been put down without proper consideration and care (not sure if I'm able to name him/what the rules of this forum are). There was no mention of it whatsoever today from and I quote "Auntie Faye"!

I'm so pleased that you got on so much better today, the camera sounds fabulous, I've not heard of cameras being used in degu mouths before. I'm appalled that the other vet clipped molar teeth, in 7 years on the forum I have never come across any degu teeth being clipped with clippers rather than burred with a dental drill, it's completely unacceptable, the sharp bits are unthinkable. I think you should complain about the inappropriate handling, clipping, lack of antibiotics, & inaccurate notes if you can face it. If it's just a small practice, there must be some sort of vet council you can complain to. It would be great if you could add the details of the Tollbarn and Westover to our vet thread deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15521/vet-guide?page=1

Honestly, complain on the phone and write to the practice manager about what's happened and demand that they give you a refund for the botched job the first vet carried out. Then once you've found out if they'll give you anything (as they should), give them bad reviews on facebook, google maps, yell, and anywhere else you can think of and warn any rodent rescues in the area! This might be useful: www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/vets-and-pets/vets-and-pets/vets/complaining-about-misconduct-or-negligence-vets/Glad to hear she's getting the care she needs now and I hope she has a smooth recovery!

Give her a day or two, and she might start tolerating the antibiotic a bit better. Her mouth is very sore at the moment and she hasn't learned that antibiotics are yummy. Until she gets the hang of it, I have a video on here somewhere of how to burrito a degu for meds. You have the advantage of not needing to access the side of her face, so you can burrito snugly around the jaw to stop her getting her paws up and out. Gimme a sec, I'll find the video deguworld.proboards.com/thread/20898/on-christmas-eve?page=6Partway down that page is a video of me massaging Zoe's jaw, and at about 2 minutes in he starts getting ansty and I burrito him several times, don't really describe it but I do it a lot. At this point in time, I wouldn't read the rest of my thread though. I didn't get a happy ending, and you're quite early on with Butter's teeth. If things aren't clearing up in a week or so, have a read through, but bear in mind what happened to me and Zoe was probably worst case scenario, and complicated by lack of access to veterinary care at the critical point. I had another video that was wound care, and I'll do a dedicated burrito video this week if I can - I'm sure I can bribe River with a syringe

I'm a bit late to this, but please don't worry. Also, apologies if I ask something already mentioned, but I'm sat at the airport on my phone.....
One of my goos has quarterly molar burring, and he's still loving life. Their mouths remain sore for a couple of days, and it's not unusual for them to be off their food. From my personal experience, I would discuss with your vet about:
* consider asking for metacam. If your goo's stressed and is then having something crap shoved into their mouth, it can unsettle them. Metacam is honey flavoured. Scaredygoo gets stressed and has to be forced to take loxicom in a burrito. Metacam is lapped direct from the syringe, and he pauses to lick the outside clean too!
* think yummy high calories. Ground almonds, ground Hazelnut, milled flax - all are available in the home baking area of your supermarket. It's Scaredygoo's post surgery nibble of choice.
* can the dosage of pain medication. Will changed/increased? My goo specialist has Scaredygoo on a daily dose of 0.1ml dog metacam (3x cat strength), and increases to twice a day in severe pain for short periods.
Let him get over the surgery before you start to wonder about quality of life for your fluff ball. Mine looks forlorn at times, but he still loves his wheel, climbing onto me for treats, and gets up enough speed to skid to a stop on the kitchen floor 😀

We have picked up the critical care Butters loves today so getting painkillers and antibiotics into her from now on should be a breeze. We hope. Have looked into complaining should Westover not refund us (not holding out hope) and seems straight forward. Haven't rung them yet as have had a busy day at work but regardless I will contact Consumer Rights and RVNs regarding the vet tonight. I'm sure the other vets are very good in their fields but the service we were provided is as you say unacceptable. He shouldn't be caring for Degus! Great video titchycatnipsandwich, very helpful.. Sorry to hear the ending wasn't a happy one for your goo
