So, I had a long think about the dog food thing. Feel very uncomfortable trying a meaty one, just because if we've guessed wrong, it might set him back or make him worse. I did try one small bit of the Yarrah veggie food, which he ate straight away. Ingredients: Cereal* (wheat*, maize*), vegetable by-products*, (sunflower seeds*, wheat*), soybeans*, yeast, minerals. *Certified organically produced, EKO, Skal 1301 Additives: Nutritional additives: Vitamin A (15,000 IU/kg), vitamin D2 (1500 IU/kg), vitamin E [DL-alpha-tocopherol acetate] (120 IU/kg).
I don't think any of this can hurt him, but seeing as meat isn't part of their diet, I'd hate to poison him or something.
Then he also ate a dried dandelion flower, which he's always turned his nose up at. He looks really well today: fur looking better, eyes look fine, active & alert, drinking water again. He has ignored his food & recovery food again, but has eaten some millet, a nut, some green oat hay, powdered dill, a tiny bit of dried sweet potato, dried dandelion & some sesame seeds. All of which I handed him. Am thinking he feels much better because of the metoclopramide, but is only eating from my hands for some reason. He's even trying to nibble my thumb nails!!
Wish I knew what was going on, in his head & his belly. Little weirdo.

Oh & I'm going to try the little guys' poops tonight, can't hurt, plus he might enjoy his first proper sniff of them (the babies, not their poops!)

lol getting to know his buddies by eating their poops....its a weird goo world! Our goo's always eat each others poops and this has worked great if one has been poorly. Sounds like his illness has brought you two close together as eating from you and nibbling your skin is a lovely bonding exercise. If he cocks his leg and wee's on you, you are definitely in there! Talking of wee, lula is the only one of ours that wee's on us especially in the morning when I lift her out of the goo room for a run, she wont leave my hand until it is dripping with her morning/cloudy wee and I always say 'thankyou princess' but its disgusting lol. All good stuff for you two, let it continue.

ewwww degus are mingers!! Hope BB can express his love without the wee, but I guess I should be honoured if he does! I guess I have no choice but to make sure I'm handing him food every hour or so, try & keep him eating. He won't take everything, but will try most of whatever I hand him. At least he likes the meds, comes running when I get the syringe out

Mine nibble the ends of my fingers when they're trying to groom me, so could be gratitude. Regards eating from your hand, he obviously sees food coming from your hand as safe and not going to make him unwell.

Randomname - if he ate the dog food, the ingredients of which are not great for all his nutrition needs but are certainly not bad either, I would give them to him, but from your hand of course. Love your "little weirdo" at the end. LOL! Goolover - a daily handful of pee, huh? What does that keep away, I wonder, LOL!

So, how's BB doing this week?

The good news is he's started eating (some of) his normal food He's only picking out bits, but it's a huge step. He seems to do it immediately after his meds, & he's not relying on me to hand it to him. Phoned vet, she said that I should finish the metoclopramide & metacam, slowly weaning him off. I have enough to last until the end of the week. Am a bit worried about this, as he's still not eating enough. Does it sound right to you? Obviously if he gets worse, he can go back on it, but I'd like to see at least a week of decent eating before stopping the metoclopramide. BB seems ok in himself, behaviour & demeanour normal. Looks well, but a little underweight still.

The thing to bear in mind is that the drugs will be having other effects on him. All drugs have side effects. For example, codeine can make you constipated. Regarding the metoclopramide, it's only ever recommended for short term use. Have a look at the list of side effects below, and you'll see that some are similar to what they're actually trying to help! Increases seizure activity in epileptics Sedation Hyperactivity Changes in behavior Constipation Diarrhea Abdominal pain

I just posted an idea in another thread that hadn't occurred to me before, so will post it here for you as well. I wonder if it might be worth trying probiotics that you can get from a medical store, and see if they are helpful? I'm just wondering if a capsule broken open and then a tiny bit on a fingertip might be licked off, or if it were mixed with the critical care, or perhaps veg baby food that isn't salted or sweetened. Have you seen him picking at any of the poos you scooped from the little boys?

I'll have a look next time I'm out. Am sure Panacur make a pro biotic paste for rabbits, will see if I can find it online. He was interested in the baby poops for a bit, sniffing them & pushing them around, but he didn't eat any. He is eating by himself, even trying things he's ignored before, but isn't eating enough. It's a good start though, he's in a much better position than last week.

I'm glad he is gaining ground! That is excellent! Better yet, the fact that he is starting to try new things. I think it is going to take a bit yet, perhaps upwards of 2-3 weeks, but as his gut continues to heal and adjust to what his diet is supposed to be, I think he will start to eat little bits more, and then all of a sudden, he'll be eating liked everything is the best thing he's ever had. But, it will take some time yet. THEN, he will have more interest in the pups!!

It's pretty amazing he's eaten green oat hay - that's the first hay type stuff I've seen him eat since I got him. Am a bit nervous about stopping his meds tomorrow, but given the possible side effects, it's probably a good idea. If he goes downhill he'll be straight back to the vets. Hopefully this will be the start of him getting much better, fingers crossed.

Bless him, just shows what a bad diet can do to them, it will catch up with them eventually. Hope he gets a taste for the good stuff and will forget the dog food he was fed on.....know you don't know for sure but being fed wrongly in his first home may be what's its all been about. Luv how members can think of something and you think oh I never thought of that and it could be the issue. Good week so far though

with the poops--did you offer him some of their soft, moist, poops, and not just the hard dry ones? They eat specific poops, not just any poops. The hard dry ones are done. The soft moist ones are for eating.
Poop connoisseurs, they are.
