Yes, I do think the Metacam is helping. I think that she breathes more easily when she is on it. The theory is that it reduces any inflammation that might be happening in the nasal cavity due to the molar root infiltration. It also helps her with any pain/discomfort she is experiencing. She is irritated by the roots going up between her ear and eye, and scratches at it. It seems that she scratches less when on the Metacam.
Thanks for the package deguconvert. I am pleased to report that she is eating, and probably feeling, quite a bit better today – still selectively but she is able to eat sunflower seeds again.

It must be reassuring to be able to see that the metacam helps. Very good to hear she is feeling a bit better now.

Tonight, Jin refuses to eat anything – either she can't or she won't. She is also a bit wobbly. I will continue to tempt her with a variety of different foods. May have to force-feed the Metacam. I hate this. It is Saturday night here and this is a long weekend with everything closed for Labour Day Monday. I pray she improves – maybe she isn't eating because she just isn't hungry right now? (Unlikely, I know.) UPDATE: She is eating again! Just ate some thawed peas.

Thank you.
Today was a good day. She ate sunflower seeds and some oats today. Only ate one thawed out pea tonight so far – not sure if it is the one with the Metacam – but she is stable and not looking too, too miserable. I will spend the next hour seeing if I can tempt her to eat more.

I see that I never updated this thread. The day after I posted, she began to eat again. I have even seen her eat the odd piece of hard food. She is doing her best to keep nourished; however, her breathing has been getting progressively worse. Today, Jin is bloating up – no doubt, because she can't breath through her nose. I am treating her with simethicone now, along with the Metacam.

So far, the simethicone seems to be helping. She is active. She wants to eat all of the time but fills easily – probably due to the air in her system. I am medicating her with Metacam once a day, and with simethicone as needed – so far, twice today. Will be watching her closely – gauging her food intake, her bloating, and her comfort/discomfort.
(I know the time will come soon when she is in so much pain that I will need to say good-bye – each day we have with her is precious and I am thankful for it.)

Took Jin to the vet this morning – found her lying on her side from the bloat. She now rests in peace. It was a very difficult decision because she perked up when we got to the vet and was super-active. There was no hope for recovery – vet gave her a day at most before she would be suffering from extreme pain from the bloat. She would have turned 6 years old on October 11. She will be sorely missed. Everyone who came to see my degus loved her because she was so trusting and friendly and fun. No doubt, her mom Peridot will miss her too, and her half-sister Jin will miss her sitting-on-top-of-the-hut buddy. I hope there is a degu afterlife because then she will be reunited with her BFF sister Meiyo, as well as her sisters Rei and Gi, and all of her other relatives who have passed before her.

I'm very sorry, she sounds like a really special girl. It must have been so hard at the vets, with her rallying like that.
Rest well, Jin xx
