Don't worry about offending your vet. Your current vet must be blind as well as thick! There's defo something sinister going on there they need to.get in there and get what ever that is out!! Poor baby I m sure alot of us have changed vets for a second opinion I.know I have!! And it was for.the better, if it saves your babies life do it xx

I am so, so glad that you are taking her to another vet tomorrow. I'm sorry that she bit you, but I think you are correct in thinking that she is in pain and that is why she bit. I really do think she needs more attention than she has received from your first vet. I hope you have excellent help and solutions for her health, healing, and great improvement.

Thank goodness we have some answers today. Mouses X-ray's didn't get sent along with her notes which was disappointing. The new vet looked at Mouse and said he thought the swelling was fluid from the joint, which would be bad as the outcome would mean amputation. He explained the name of the type of joint and drew me a diagram but I have forgot the name . Or option two is it is infected. He numbed the area with cream and stuck a needle in and really thick pus was squeezed out. Mouse was such a good girl. He said he could feel another pocket but it may be fibrous tissue. We have been asked to go back Monday morning so Mouse can be put to sleep and it can be drained properly. The vet explained there still may be issues because it's on a joint but I feel a lot better. We have Baytril now for her too. Her leg is still really big but think some of the pressure relief made her feel better too. Thanks for your advice everyone.

I phone the old vet and give them what for if they didn't send the notes, surely they have a duty of care to the animal if your going for a second opinion, glad your getting somewhere now poor little mite xx

My goodness!!! I am sooo glad that you have seen this new vet and he took the time to really check it out. I just bet that getting some of that puss out was a relief for her. Her body will be less taxed having it out, that is for certain. The poor little love! Did they take another Xray since the other vet did not send it along? You must be very glad that you did pursue another opinion.

The new vet didn't take an x-ray and didn't seem too concerned about a break but was concerned there still may be "interruption" to the joint that may cause rheumatoid type pain in the future, you never usually get an x-ray at your first consultation and have to book in again, so the can be sedated, usually a "morning" thing where you leave the animal with the experiences I've had with vets.
If they suggest one I will have it, I will ring my old vets in the morning and ask if they can send the x-rays over. The second vet made it clear on their website when you get a second opinion it isn't changing vets but I will certainly be moving there so I can't see why the x-rays can't also go over, I've paid enough for them. We think a copy may not have been sent because they probably are not digital, although this is a presumption but I will ask tomorrow.
Mouse seems fine in herself, still carrying a huge leg around, I'm just hoping everything goes ok tomorrow for the little one, can't stop thinking about it.

Big update!
The new vets did carry out another x-ray b4 treating mouse and found a fracture and dislocation!! They were also concerned about the infection being in the bone. They said the leg will probably never come right so best thing for her was to have it amputated, I agreed for this to go ahead.
She has coped with the anaesthetic well and is back home. Poor thing must have been in so so much pain over the last two weeks - it's true what they say about them hiding it.
I went and collected the x-rays from the old vets this afternoon too - you can see the fracture as clear as anything?! I think my old vet needs some new glasses!! I just can't believe it.
The people on here diagnosed her better with just a photo!
I'm just hoping now she doesn't touch the stiches and there is no infection from the op. I have left her in her travel cage so she can see her friends, I'm too scared to put her back in with her two cage mates.
Hope she gets used to it
I will add some photos of the x-rays later and mouse later in the week, letting her rest

Gosh, that is a big update! I hope she can make a speedy recovery now that all the damage has been removed. I take you have baytril and metacam for her? I would hope that now that all the infection has been removed that the skin at least will heal over fairly quickly so she could go back in with her friends fairly soon.
Once you see how well she can get around I'm sure you could make a few modifications to the cage to make things easier for her.
I would complain to the first vet and ask for your money back. It's a disgrace that they have missed a fracture and dislocation and left an animal in pain. You could even report them. Can you name them so that other degu people can avoid them?
Get well soon, Mouse xx

Awww I will tell Mouse you sent your wishes!
Yes have both painkillers and antibiotics but she is going back tomorrow for the pain killers injecting and stiches checked.
We are thinking of asking the old vet for our money back (£130 we spent there for nothing) but don't really know how to go about it, I'm not wanting compensation just the money back as even my husband now agrees it's unacceptable to miss a fracture he himself can see! The bill today was £330 then the extra visits will top the total bill over £500.
Does anyone else have Degu insurance ?? as I enquired as few weeks ago then decided against it, now I'm seriously considering it for the future.
Yes and if anyone has any suggesting about adapting the cage please let me know, we are not very DIY savvy but I will do my best. We currently have a SKY X trail with wooden shelves and little ledges dotted all over

Christ I'd think that your on very good grounds for suing that vet for neglect and prolonged suffering of an animal! I woyldnwrite a very firm.letter stating that due to there miss diagnoses and prolonged sufferongnof your animal and the fact you had to seek.out a vet for a second opinion the least they can do is refund the 130 pounds you spent wit the. Which was a waste of your time. If they refuse I'd threaten taking it further because that's really really bad practise. Your poor poor animal hugs from me and.the fat ones xxx

Wow, that's a heck of a bill!! I think other people have looked into insurance before and it just wasn't economical, the conclusion was that you are better off putting some money away yourself each month. Hopefully this is a one off and you won't ever have such a big bill again.
Re the old vet, I would phone and ask to speak to the practice manager, explain your complaint, emphasising that they left Mouse in pain with no real treatment and no painkillers for ages, threaten to report them to the British Veterinary Association if necessary. You can say that you could see the fracture yourself on the xray and that your second opionion vet amputated straight away on seeing the fracture, dislocation and severe infection, so you are basing your complaint on the information from the second vet.
My initial thoughts on adapting the cage are to make the ramps shallow and maybe not so many ledges because I wouldn't think she will be able to jump very well. We can help with more specific ideas or solutions once you know what she can manage. You'll also need to keep an eye on how she manages eating, whether she manages to ballance with the stump to keep both hands free for eating.

I agree that your old vet should give you a refund. POOR MOUSE!!!
However I'm sure she will adapt very well in time; I've seen a video of a degu with no feet (due to bumblefoot) - he manages.

He is the practice manager, it's his own vet practice and he is the only vet (we live in a small village). That's why i'm thinking a letter is best as I will probably get upset as it is about Mouse and my husband is really non confrontational lol.
I will never have an animal x-ray done again and not ask to see it afterwards, lesson well and truly learnt!
