Hi
We have gained 5 male degus. 4 are two year old brothers, 1 is a lot older (don't know how old) and has had cataracts for at least 2 years. He has got to know his new home and seems to get around fine, the only time he gets frustrated is at feeding time when he sits in the bowl and won't let any of the others near it till he has had his fill. Is there anything I can do to make his life more easier?

5 Food bowls!
Or at least try to add one or two.
Hm...I had never thought whether it's the cataracts, but our Scratchy has bad cataracts, and he also sits in the main food bowl and swears at Manny when he tries to get food from it. I suppose it could make a degu anxious about food.

One of my degus, Makoto, also has cataracts. He is a feisty one – has always been even before his cataracts – and always makes sure he is in the bowl first. More bowls, as Ilikedegus suggested, is what I do – one bowl per degu if need be.

Also check out the food you are feeding and have a look at the commercial food chart deguworld.proboards.com/thread/17365/commercial-food-chart Degus with cataracts should be fed a low carb diet, you need to make sure they get a veg based food with no carbs like corn, wheat or oats in. Carbohydrate rich foods can contribute to osmotic cataracts, which are the most common kind.

Thanks guys,
there are now 2 feeding bowls and things are a little less manic, I'm also putting them on different levels, that way Blind Pew can eat on his own and there is a lot less fighting and he can sit in there to his hearts content.

Glad that has helped, I would still get more bowls, you can use anything, I use the little bowls that supermarket creme brulees come in.

We have a group of small souffle dishes for the largest group and they work a treat
