Hello, I thought I'd post on this forum as I'm having a similar problem with one of my boys. He looks like he has like a full on erect penis but he is acting completely normal. I'm really worried (natural paranoid owner alert) but what should I do? I'm home alone ATM as my mum is away (I'm 20 don't panic), should I take him to the vets or is this something that happens sometimes or what? I'm not sure how long he's been like it today.

Hi! If he can't seem to retract it and/or it appears swollen then yes, get him to the vets ASAP. If you can't get an appointment this late on in the day then you can try pushing it back in it's sheath again using ky jelly on an ear bud.

I agree try a bit of lubrication first and see how you get on....kind of weird job to do...but it normally does the trick

Hey all , I ended up taking Chimie to the vets last night and again this morning. They gave my poor little guy an injection both times and put a type of gel on him, I'm been doing the same at home as well and it didn't sort out over night. So the plan now is to use the gel, keep an eye on him and see if it goes down by Monday and if it doesn't he may well have to be castrated which they said should be perfectly safe. I am worried for him, the vet told me it was nothing I'd done wrong at all but I still feel responsible for him fingers crossed he'll be okay soon!

Hi, sorry to hear it's still giving him problems. Have they given you any antibiotics as it could be an infection causing it. I hope it resolves itself!
Also, don't blame yourself for it at all. You managed to catch it and act quickly! You're doing everything you can for the little one.

They gave me some gel that apparently had an anti inflammatory in it. I got him home today and this evening I actually think we may have reached a break through and the problem may have been sorted. I can't say for sure there's nothing to worry about, but there's some definite improvement so fingers crossed he won't need the op but if he does I'll just have to spoil him rotten when he's home.

hi I had a problem wi zookie, im up in Scotland and pdsa wouldn't look at him,as I live under wrong post code, I wis furious I have never herd of anything so stupid. I had problems finding a vet who had experience dealing wi goos, most wouldn't cover him on pet aid either as hes a small animal, he ended up getting put tae sleep it wis so bad,

I'm sorry you had a bad experience trying to get vet care, Karengoo. I've never heard of anyone managing to get pet aid or use PDSA for a degu, I don't know why it's different rules for small animals. Anyway, if you still have degus, I would definitely keep ringing round and try to find a vet now for future reference so there is no panic next time. A degu consultation in UK usually costs £10 to £20, and any medication £5 to £10.

Not well at all, you wouldn't think a postcode would matter over an animals life! Some places have the worst priorities. And indeed, I'm a northerner, but not quite as northern as you

ERUGH!!! Found Dennis last night with a very nasty Penis prolapse!! He didn't come out at feeding time which was odd as there all usually screamimg at the bars to get food. I cleaned up it up and managed to get ot back inside and coat it with ky jelly he's not right shouts at me if I go near him and he's shaking alot and won't eat even his favourite treats. This morning it was fully prolapsed and was completely dry like a crisp, again I cleaned it and got it back in I can't see if he has a hair ring or not he will not let me touch it but it does seem to have some sort of sore on the end its not another degu bite as he's still seprate from his brother and they haven't had a play date this week. Hopefuly the vets will sort him out poor baby! X

Hi animalmadchloe, poor thing, if the jelly isnt working, you could try putting salt on it. The vets did this with my boy and said it retracted quite fast but they then had to stitch it back inside to encourage it to stay in and leave it for 12 hours then I had to take him back in and get the stitch cut. My vet said that the pain they have when this happens is quite severe so no wonder he isnt eating. Degu's loose weight scarily fast and its important they continue to eat to keep their body functioning so you need to be quite fast in getting it sorted. The soreness on the end will probably be from him trying to get it back in.
