Hi. My degus have been eating grass that I've bought in packet form from a pet shop. They love it. I don't give it to them every day though. I just wondered if anyone has used grass seed grown for lawns? Thought it may work out cheaper than buying a tiny tray of grass all the time? Look forward to any help. Thanks!

I often give our degus fresh cut grass from our yard. Besides clover, it's their favorite!

Just make sure you know what's been on the grass - i.e. if you have "communal" grass, it's not a good idea as pesticides are often sprayed on them etc. As long as you know where it's been and that it's safe then go for it.

degumaus: That's such a great idea. Can I ask you how you secure the grass tray to the cage? I think mine would flip it over in no time.

To be honest I never thought about securing the grass tray in the cage. Mine didn´t try to flip it over. But I think it´s quite heavy with the soil and the grass, so they would not be able to flip it over. Maybe you could put some extra stones in it

Maybe... I wouldn't want it on the floor of the cage though, mine are big borrowers and it would be filled with bedding in a minute... Maybe if I get one and attach it to the side of the cage up on a leaping ledge or something.. Hmmm... My cage is taller than it is width and length. My cage is weird cause i made it out of acrylic, so anything i want to add to it, i have to drill into the sides, but it does keep my floor bedding and turd free.
