Fresh hay can be given on any occasion, they also quite like dandilions, as long as they are picked from an area free of pollution.

ok, so i am wondering--dandelion is ok to give, but do you give it fresh or do you let it dry out? i buy fresh carrots and sweet potatoes, wash them, dry them thoroughly and then cut them up small and let them dry out for a couple of days so they become hard--my guys go nuts for them, they climb in the dish if i don't watch them. also, what other fresh veggies can they have and do they have to be dried also? i was told that if you give them "wet" veggies they will get the runs. i swear i watch their diet better than my own, but like kids, you gotta feed them good stuff--isn't it so?

There are literally loads of healthy treats available to buy (for UK) here: www.chinchillas2shop.co.uk/foodntreats.htmI give mine fresh food in small quantities and have never had a problem with 'funny tummies'. They particularly like romaine lettuce and curly kale - most lettuces are no good but romaine is healthy. I give carrot too, but they aren't so keen on that.

Gooey, I do the same as you: I buy organic carrots and sweet potatoes, cut them into small pieces and put them in front of the heat vents so they dry out. They love these treats! They won't eat anything that's not dried. They only get one piece of carrot a day but I'm wondering about the starch in the sweet potatoes and if we should limit those as well.
I'm waiting for the dandelions to bloom so I can grow my own.

Dandelion greens and flowers are my Degus FAVORITE snack. You can build up gradually to 1/2 cup of greens per Degu per day. Just be certain the Dandelions have not been sprayed with any chemicals.
Mine will eat fresh or dried carrots and sweet potato. Dried concentrates the sugars so be very cautious about how much you feed. I limit fresh too to once every week or two. Better to provide them fresh greens.

'Normal' lettuce isn't good though - as it has no nutritional value and is likely to cause bloating. Romaine lettuce is ok, but even then I only feed it fairly sparingly. Cabbage and cauliflower are ok in small quantities but they too can cause gas build up problems.

Btw...
Dried carrot contains about 44g sugar per 100g. That's very much, I think. Dried apple contains even more, about 60g per 100g.
This can't be good for degus...

I give my some of those miniature carrots on occasion and just wedge them in their cage so they chew on it. And just the other day I bought them some fresh green beans and a little squash. I guess I just assumed neither would be bad for them since they are so good for us, and they absolutely loved it. They really liked the squash seeds and everything and I'm glad I didnt give them very much of it because they ate it all within about a minute. No ill effects yet, no runs or anything, and they keep checking their little veggie bowl for more

I feed mine grass grown from seed (bought from a pet shop). They love it! Also dried blackberry leaves, alfalfa sticks (once or twice a week) and a food called 'Chinchillas flower garden' This contains hollyhock, camomile, marigold, rose and bluebottle flowers.
