Hello my wife and I just adopted two lovely little degu girls Nutmeg: and Sage We were in a Pets @ Home store getting some stuff for our cats and they were there for adoption as their previous owner couldn't keep them. They were both just so adorable we had to give them somewhere nice to live. Currently we're keeping the cats out of the room but in the next few days I'll build some shelving so their cage is well out of cat reach. Anyway thought I'd say hi, my wife shannonoflondon is also registered so you may even see her on here too.

Oh they are cute, i've done exactly the same thing twice, adoted 2 girls who unfourtunatly were given sugar water when they fell ill and developed cataracts and 2 boys who the store said had been there to long and lost their "cuteness factor". And hello , well done for adopting, atleast now these cuties will get a good life.

Our two girls are both around one year old, and I don't understand how anyone can say they lose "cuteness" just by being a little older.

Hello and welcome to you and your new goo girls! Well done for adopting a needy pair. They are very cute, love their names. Hopefully you will find plenty of interesting and informative stuff on here. We are all always learning. They can be such complex little creatures, but you can also sometimes read them like a book, normally when they are plotting some trouble, hehe If you have any queries or questions fire away. Hope you enjoy the forum!

you can also sometimes read them like a book, normally when they are plotting some trouble, hehe Now you warn me When we first got them home the store had put them in a cardboard box. We had to set the cage up and get the food, toys, water in there so we " safely" stored the box in the bathroom, while we set up the cage as quickly as possible. Didn't take too long, but long enough for the little rascals to chew their way out of the box and run free round the bathroom. Turns out my wife has defter hands than me so she caught one, passed her to me and then caught the other. They were skittish at being handled by unknown hands so we got them to their cage without delay. But it was a panicky moment when we first discovered they were loose.

Hello, u got beautiful girls, well done for giving them a nice home.
I sometimes wonder, if degus tend to get less scared of unknown women than man, because of their softer, higher voice??? Is it nonsense or anybody thinks the same?

I really wonder how in the pet shop they could even think about using a cardboard box for transporting degus... You can be really, really lucky that they only escaped in the bathroom!! A friend of mine told a story of degus being transported in a cardboard box as well... They had to dismantle the dashboard of the car to find the degu... First they tried it the normal way, putting a trap in the car and waiting... no chance, so finally they had to do it the hard way. Better don't even think about using a cardboard box for transporting degus again... These little monsters are able to chew through aluminium if the have the chance and will. Cardboard isn't even a challenge ;D.

Is it nonsense or anybody thinks the same? I do try to be soft and gentle when talking to then, its only been a few days but they seem to be ralaxing around us both. I slowly approach the cage talking softly and then offer my fingers so they can sniff them. The first few days they were too nervous but now they're happier and come for a sniff. Once they're more comfortable I want to give them regular runs out of the cage around the room.

Certainly it would have been a nightmare if they'd escaped in the car. But fortunately they're safe and comfy.

Ha ha, Break Out 2012!
Hi everyone, I'm the other half of davidoflondon. :-) I am so in love with these degus!!! I have had hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils and one bunny in the past... and I have always wanted to have rats or mice but their shorter life spans always held me back. I just love rodents though!
I have known about degus from pictures and stuff I would encounter online from time to time, but I don't believe I ever saw one in person in America, where I'm from. (Moved to the UK and married my beloved.)
They are just too darn cute. I love how their heads are sort of chipmunk shaped. I like chinchillas too and I love how their head shape resembles chins. I just saw someone's picture of 3 degus on here and remarked to David how I love the puffed up smugness emanating from the photo.
In the end, I just really think degus are a near perfect pet for us! I'm sure we'll soon get our girls to cuddle with us a little bit and they are going to be spoiled rotten!

Welcome both of you. You have two gorgeous girls there Just a warning, they are addictive. If you are not careful you will end up with more than your original two pretty quickly. I went from 2 to 6 in less than 12 months! ;D
