I ordered a bag of dandelion roots (the JR farm ones) from Zooplus, and having looked at them a second time, there's a bloody CATERPILLAR in the bag Alive, too. I suppose it's eating them. If it is actually a caterpillar. So... what on earth do I do? Are they safe anyway?

If you don't feel like feeding it, send the bag back (postage paid by receiver) and ask for another bag. It is a natural product, but you don't have to accept living animals which are maybe eating what you paid...

Yeah, I think I will send it back. We spotted another in there as well, so there are at least two, probably more.

Me too. You don't want them crawling out, setting up house in a little cocoon somewhere, and emerging post New Years to be a moth or something. YUCK!!

I bought some herb mixes from my local pet shop made by Burgess and when I got them home I noticed that there were loads of little caterpillars crawling around inside the bag! I couldn't get back to the shop so threw it out and emailed the company. to date I haven't had a reply.

Send them back. I ordered a bag of plantain leaves from Hay Experts and they had maggots in them (the little fruit fly ones). Had the same with two packs of dandelion leaves from P@H as well. Both places either gave me refunds or sent another bag.

I just read in a German degu forum that there a degu owner had had a problem with maggots in dandelion roots from JR Farm, too. Not only in one bag but in all three he'd bought. His degus even suffered from diarrhoea he ascribed to the maggots. Have you sent the bag back and got another one? Any explanation? Best thing is most probably not to open such a bag right away and mix it with the other food but wait a couple of weeks to see if there is anything inside.

We have had problems with the little seed/feed beetles when we had hamsters, and sometimes, tho rarely, in pellet food for guinea pigs and hedgehog. If you freeze the food, just put the entire bag/tub in the freezer for several hours or overnight, it generally kills them. Even kills the eggs before they hatch, once we detect any bugs at all, we freeze everything in the house just in case, and we don't see anything else until some future batch comes in contaminated. Might not work with all bugs, but helps with some.

A couple of weeks ago we had a problem with bugs in the paddy reis. We put it a couple of minutes (about 10) in the microwave and back in the bag... Well, probably the bugs had been killed but not the larvas as some weeks later there were again bugs in this bag.

I asked about getting a refund or replacement and they said I should be getting a refund soon (5-7 working days). They didn't ask for the bag back so I've just thrown it away. I don't think I'll be buying any more

what a coincidence--tonight opened a large plastic jar we had stored wild bird seed in, only to see the top layer all webbed over and hubby who was at a different angle exclaims "I see crawlies!" so without waiting to examine further, we slapped the lid on, and jar is now outside where it is a delightful 27°F/-3°C tonight. Hoping the raccoons and such don't find it, or if they do, they take it off the porch before pulling the top off and dumping it all over.
