Hopefully I will be building my new cage next week so I have been trying to think of things I can make.
One thing I really want to make is a wooden nest box with a tunnel network attached to it so my guys can use different tunnels. The thing I'm struggling with is what to use for tunnels? Also, do I make ready made tunnels or part of them so they can dig the rest out?

poster tubes are perfect! go to your local cinema, I work at a multiplex and we get dozens of poster tubes that build up and get thrown away. they are usually over a meter long and degus love to scurry around in them and shred them to use the card as bedding

Carpet tube would work well too. They are almost the same as poster tubes but may be easier to get hold of. If you want wooden tubes you could make square tubes with not too much effort.

Yes, wooden tubes are easy to made: We can open this one to clean it inside if necessary. It is also painted inside and on top. My goos, especially DJ, love it. It's perfect for gnawing ;D Tunnels we have with different materials: cardboard, wood, terracotta and cork.

My girls' burrow consists of four carpet tubes with straw filling the space in-between. Its not a network strictly speaking as the four tunnels are not directly connected; but they don't seem to mind. They slowly strip the tubes from the inside and use it as nesting material; it seems to be very comfy in there because they quite like a lie in in the morning
