My degu was neutered about 4 months ago, he lives with a female and still tries to mate with her. Ever since when I've noticed him doing this, I'm guessing at the point when he would normally ejaculate, he starts squeaking, like 'yip, yip, YIP, yip'. Following this he will 'clean himself' down there..not really sure what he's doing. Does this mean he is in pain? Or is it just that he can't figure out why he isn't ejaculating? Sorry for slightly weird subject!

Is it possible that he gets excited, then starts the mating bark and because he didn't actually mated, he finishes the job himself? If that's the case I would say it's fairly normal with males (neutered or not).

That seems to be perfectly normal for any male degu. They just had sex. They have to make sure everybody knows. And they clean themselves because of intimate hygiene reasons... Most degus do not lose their sexual desire after being neutered. Though it may weaken.
