ive read post like this before but as i have just lost my degu from this i would like too post this.
dry pelleted food has everything in it for your degus or chins too live but has no benifit on there teeth as too keeping them short and not overgrown.
You may think but i give my pet hay too and this wears down there teeth.
hay is what your pet should mainly eat and yes it will keep there teeth from growing too much if they are eating anough of it sadly with my degus i was giving them the recomended ammount of supreme sience degu food which they must have been mostly
eating and not eating the hay i gave them i should have done more too monitor this but i dident.
my degus got dental problems and i dident notice this in time for one of my degus who stop eating and became very inactive i took him too the vet and he said he had dental disease and he needed his teeth grinded down so he could eat properly again so he was kept in over night but he died in the night.
the vet said he had no problem on the outside but when he opened him up he found he had a fatty liver caused again by his diet. He said that normally if they have this they can be fine if they are eating but if they stop eating it can cause them problems and can die very fast he also said his liver could of had an infection but the 2 day not eating properly and the fatty liver suggested it was more likly that but i would of had too have samples of the liver taken away for testing too be sure which is not cheap.
my other degu that is still alive is still active and is eating still but he too has dental disease and has gone into the vets too get his teeth grinded down im hopeing he will be ok. Vet thinks he may have a fatty liver too but if i take him off the pellet like food and give him lots of dryed grass hay and some leafy greens this problem should go away ands also keep his teeth healthy.
i have no started too reduce the ammount given too my degus and chinchillas i dont want too change there diet too fast as this can upset there stomachs i now give them 3 different types of hay and dried grass to encourage them too eat more hay and grass so they have some choice and i give them other things like dandelion leaves and fresh leafy green like cabbage. i intend too get them all of pellet in the next month or 2 and willnever feed it them again. i have learned the hard way but i hope someone will read this and not feed there pets pellet.
they wouldent eat it in the wild pellet it was designed for rabbits when they where kept for meat this was then redone for chinchillas and the pelt trade they have no interest longterm teeth care just healthy young animals too kill
this is the same with show chinchilla breeders in a way but they care alot more about there chinchillas health but may not in some cases have much interst in oldage teeth problems that chins get alot from being fed on pellet.
If u want your chinchillas and degus too have no dental problems plz either not feed them pellet or if u must feed them small ammount too encourage them too eat more grass and hay as this is what they should mainly eat and will makesure there teeth dont overgrow and they dont get too fat.
there is a post on here about natural leaves and other food that degus can eat plz read that post if u havent alrdy i found it very interesting and gave me a few ideas too save money on feed.
