Hello, mu degu Joseph is missing one nail and there was some blood on the paw and around cage. Jo's not bother by it and it isn't bleeding anymore. I cleaned it with saline solution. Never had 'injured' degu before so looking for some advice. Is it better to just leave it or keep cleaning it with saline solution for few days? Is there something else I should do except keep an eye on any signs of infection?
thank you
Also on different note, if I have some leftover atb and metacam in my fridge, how long I can keep it before it's not usable anymore? tx

When ever a degu is wounded you should remove the dust bath. But lost nails do not seem to be much of a problem for the degu. It usually bleeds a lot and looks horrible, but it is not a big deal. Keeping an eye on it is always right, but he should not need any further care.
Metacam should be okay for at least two or three weeks. Antibiotics should theoretically be usable much longer because...uhm... they are antibiotic. But in practise you should never use them without consulting a vet. In fact you should not even have much left after using it, because you should always use antibiotics as long as the vet has instructed you to do and not only until the degu is doing better. That is... unless you want to produce your own resistant bacteria at home...

Thanks for help guys. Also I do use medication as vet says but tend to end up with some leftovers. I assumed I was given more by vet as sometimes it's tricky to give it to degu and there can be some vaste, but that's probably not the case. Anyway, not important. Tx

Yes. The vets usually give you a bit more. Because sometimes the medicine get's into the fur instead of the mouth. As for my advice on the use of it... I just wanted to be sure. Vets are already very lavish with antibiotics compared to human medicine. So... We should at least be sure to use it correctly. I am glad you are aware of that. But not everybody might be. Against some diseases we are dependend on the same medication we use for our pets. We have to keep them effective as long as possible.
