Hi, you can't be really sure if they mated based on that squeeking, I think it's called mating bark but he could be doing it for other reasons too. If they are in metal cage, let them climb up on the sides, tempting them with treats and then u can see their bellies and check their males/females parts. If you keep them together, they will mate though. How old are they?

How long have they been together? I am also wondering how old they are?
As Ady says they can make the 'mating bark' without actually mating. Boys can be quite disgusting really I'm afraid, if you get what I mean.
The only way to know for sure is to check their bits. If you struggle to decide what sex they are you can always take a photo and post it on here for some opinions. Sexing degus is normally quite straight forward but there can be exceptions to the rule.

You should check their gender if you have doubts. There is a good guide here on how the difference between man and female looks like. If you can't handle them yet, make them crwal up against the cage, food is excellent for it. If they don't stay like that for long, take a picture to examine afterwards. You may need to try this several times to be sure.

Also, male goos are known to "pleasure" themselves and this will also result in the mating bark. It's like a proclaimation they prevent from happening afterward, anymore than they prevent hiccups. LOL!
