Hey everyone,
I just discovered this evening that one of my degus has a tooth broken in half. He is still his cheery confident self, jumping and attacking the glass ready for play time. He still eats and drinks as far as I can tell too. I have also noticed that he is till chewing things in the cage to keep his teeth short.
Do I need to go to the vet for this or will the half tooth eventually grow out to match the other?
I was also wandering, could this be down to week teeth? or more likely just an accident (no signs of blood anyhere)? he is my most crazy degu...
What part of the degus diet goes towards strengthening thier teeth? in case there is something I am not feeding them.
(i have not noticed this problem ever before with any of my degus)
Thanks in advance

It could be that he landed a rather badly place jump and broke the tooth in the process. It isn't what I would call a hugely common experience, and yet is it uncommon. The most important thing for you to know is that it isn't something you need to go to the vet about. Their teeth grow VERY quickly and in a weeks time you may find that it is completely grown out already!! So long as he is eating and chewing well, then we know that he doesn't have a jaw injury. All in all, I think he is well and there is no need to fear.

I have been watching him and his jaw seems totally fine, I recently invested in some dried plantain and birch / willow bark peices which he has gone totally crazy for.. NOM NOM NOM

LOL!! Don't you love it when you hit on that something that they just go CRAZY for?? Wish we could find that "something" for our tiniest degu!! She doesn't react to anything!
