Ok, firstly in my defense, I am only 19 and hence don't know much about the world and things such as cleaning, etc I was cleaning the cage out the other day and used some pet-safe disinfectant. I sprayed it on the levels (mdf), but straight away it just soaked in and I couldn't spread it around or anything, and I tried washing it off a bit but that didn't help. Is it going to rot the wood if I keep trying? Do I even need to use it on the floors as I use a lot of bedding (though the degus do dig it up sometimes)?

If you spray it sraight onto the wood it will just soak up straight away (same with cardboard or anything absorbant). You need to spray it across the levels in like a sideways motion tilting the bottle on it'sside, so it covers the whole level (if that makes sence?) I don't think I'm explaining it very well, but.... perhaps someone else will.
wipe it off straight after spraying, doing little sections at a time.

I would suggest, if possible, buying some self adhesive vinyl floor tiles (like these www.wickes.co.uk/invt/620050 ) and sticking them on your MDF shelves. This will stop any pee or disinfectant from soaking in and makes the shelves wipe clean. Hope that makes sense?!
