since we separated Eric from Manny and Bernard he has been regularly letting out long high pitched squeaks, is it because he is pining for attention? he doesn't appear to be in any pain.
they have stopped arguing through the mesh gap between levels in the cage and i have been getting him out lots for lots of love and attention

Perhaps he is pining for Manny and Bernard . . . which I know is a bit insane as they fight horribly right now . . . but maybe in the degu brain fighting with your cage mate is better than being lonely?? I don't know, these little guys can be such a puzzle. But is does make me think of a lonely fella calling out for his mates and wondering when they will return.

I wouldn't worry about the squeaks. The full repertoire of degu vocalisation is still poorly understood, so what they mean may be anyone's guess. On of my girls sometimes makes “long high pitched squeaks” without any discernible reason.
It is very good to hear that things at the divider have calmed down. I think that if you don't see aggression at the mesh for another week or so, you could slowly start swapping the dust baths.
