Well after a lot of hard work from my other half our custom built goo cage is ready! Well almost - the glass for the front is on order and should be here monday, and well obviously there are no goos in it, but its almost there. A friend of ours is also supplyng all the apple branches and sticks we can ever use lol. The two hammocks were from the fantastic fuzzymum we worked out it has cost around £220 including all the little bits and pieces in it. It is a metre wide by a metre and a half tall. what do you think?

Very nice indeed.
Is it mainly made out of of wood?
I have owned degus / chinchillas that have chewed holes 2cm deep in a wall ;D ;D

yeah it is at the moment - but have figured if there are signs of chewing thru the walls we can patch with metal so should be ok?

Wow, this looks great ;D And to think this was just a sketch exactly a week ago. Very well done!!When it has the doors and some goos in it, I am sure it could go onto Nightwishraven's example gallery (where my cage is undeservedly represented twice, perhaps your's can replace the older version ). My only question would be whether you have sufficient aeration (I can't see the vents clearly).

Ady - Thanks I use metal cup hooks screwed into the wood Fred - thanks, not bad for his first project huh! I know hard to believe how quickly he has built it, i only mentioned wanting goos a week before that vent wise there is a huge vent at top which is 11cm wide and runs the whole length of the cage, the tank area at the bottom is completly opened too. we are toying with the idea of either cutting mesh vents into the side if need be, or locking the doors with inch or so gap at front and maybe meshing there if need be to give complete frontal venting?

yeah it is at the moment - but have figured if there are signs of chewing thru the walls we can patch with metal so should be ok? Yeah you could always line it with mesh if you do have any problems. You could always add some branches for you degus to chew on.

I wasn't sure whether this was a vent at the top or an effect of the light. I think that IF necessary, one additional mesh vent in each side will do the trick. There is no reason to be concerned about degus chewing holes in the wall. We recently discussed this here and on deguforum.de and there seem to have been just three serious cases for hundreds of wooden cages here and there. However, have you protected the holes in the levels? This is were your soon to come little monsters could attack the edges

yep the holes are lined - and replaceable if need be.
We have a friend who is currently chopping branches for us so they will have a constant supply of them too.
Was soo annoyed when they said I had to wait a few days for the glass, I want my degus now!

pinkhairedelfI must apologise for not posting on here earlier, but I want to congradulate you for building such a fantastic enclosure. It is truly one of the best I have seen so far. The photo of your cage has been added to the cage building article on the Octodondegus website. Well done !

Hi Pinkhair! Im loving the cage, looks awesome buddy! You may want to consider edging the wooden strips you are using to stop bedding falling off the edge. I use a metal mesh, it bends nicely over the metal and you can firmly staple gun it on Keep an eye on my blog, I will be posting an example of what happens to wood that is not edged and how to edge it shortly! Keep up the good work and have a nice weekend! Josh
