They are an absolute No No. Not only for degus but for any other small animals as mice, hamsters, rats etc.. They are far too small. You can use them for housing degus half an hour whilst cleaning their cage but that's it. Degus enjoy running, playing, exploring their cage. They just don't have this possibility in this jail-cage. So please, don't even consider buying it for animals.

Have a look here and here. Degus really need space to run... 100-120 cm length would be fine. Degus are really active animals and only show their full range of behaviour in an adequate housing. Can you imagine building a cage on your own?

Sierrasmom, I have this cage. At the time we got it, the info I had said it was more than generous enough for 2 degus. And the picture does not do it justice, by covering the shelves/levels, it is much better than it looks as an open-wire version. Since it has ramps connecting the shelves and levels, they CAN run a continuous distance. But...
...Despite having made solid layers and shelves, and adding in more level space and branches and a big wheel and things, it is not really big enough at all for 2 degus. Even before finding this forum, I had realized this, just from watching them, and when trying to add new features and changes to keep life interesting for them.
Right now we are trying to figure out where to fit a bigger cage in our little house, since we have vertical space, but not the horizontal space that would be best for them. With this cage, I have figured out that it it would be easy to hook two together side by side longways, and then something would just have to cover where the two bottom pans join to make sure no little toes got caught in the space if they separated a touch. (I'm thinking a piece of branch with a slit in it slid down over the edges like a cap.)
It is a good, sturdy cage, but really about half the size it should be.

Thanks for all of the information. I too, have the vertical space but not so much the horizontal space. I am not very crafty at all so building a cage really isn't an option for me.

Several of our members have the Sky Xtrail cage (also available in the US as Critter Nation- Double Level) and seem to be very happy with it.

The Critter Nation (Midwest Pets Critter Nation) is the one I have my eye on, but we don't have room for it at the moment, and life is complicated so rearranging furniture/the house to fit it in is just not going to happen for a while. Also eyeing the space along the top of the living room wall, a good 18-foot run, and jokingly talking of making a LONG cage up there, but no construction projects are going to be happening any time soon, either. darn!
