does anyone have any remedies to the obscene pissy funk my degus are creating? I dont want to burn candles or incense or use air freshener in the room as It could be hazardous to their health. Is there anything I can put in the cage that will make them smell more pleasant.

I've never noticed that my degus smell! Hmmmm.... can't help with this one. Perhaps try a new cage disinfectant or use white vinegar mixed with water?

Odour zapper is an animal friendly air freshener available from pets at home. It's not on their website but is available in store in either lemon or lavender fragrance. My friend uses it in her rat room and it's really good.

What do you use for bedding? When I first got my cage it got smelly quickly, but this was because my degus move the bedding away and pee on the wooden platforms, creating stains that is difficult to remove. I have remedied this by first having a layer of newspaper on every platform, and then cover it with bedding (hemp). The newspaper is absorbing most of the urine and it has become a lot less smelly now

I have 2 pairs of goos and they differ greatly with theur level of smelliness. Dave and Jim rarely smell at all, even when they are due a cage clean. Now Stan and Nige on the other hand, pooey. They are smelly little so and sos. They all live in wooden cages, with floor tiles covering the shelves and I use finacard and hay for both cages as substrate. So basically I have come to the conclusion that Stan (especially, I call him stinky Stan) and Nige are just smellier. I suppose it is the same with some people EDIT: Sorry, I just realised I didn't actually help with your query at all. I'm just used to my degus smell, keeps unwanted visitors away I agree, scented candles a fair distance away from the cage would be fine. You can get some really nice Christmassy ones at this time of year, lovely!
