There are 2 babies hiding behind the food dish. I don't see a lot of baby-parent interaction? Is it because I'm near the cage?

Hi I would put them all together in some kind of warm nest and make sure parents are keeping them warm. They can't stay warm themself.

Hi pacoparrot, congrats on the baby goos.. ;D Here's a few tips to help you along if you don't know them already that is..... :)Have you separated the dad.. as he can get her pregnant straight after giving birth, best to keep him out for 3-5 days, then let him back in to help her... Also make sure she has plenty of clean soft bedding to take into the nest, like tissue paper, loo roll, kitchen roll and things like that ( my goo gave birth in a hammock so i had to lower it to the ground, now the full ground floor is one giant nest of shredded kitchen & loo roll )... If you have bars on the cage you'll need to cover them as the pups are Sooooo itsy bitsy and move around quite quickly after birth, it's possible that they could crawl through the bars...(I taped cardboard all around the bottom level, it also helps keep the draught out, as ady said the pups cant keep themselves warm yet so anything you can do to help mum is good).. She will need a wee bit of extra fatty foods like some extra pumpkin seeds or half a monkey nut everyday while she's nursing.. Not to mention extra normal food and plenty of water.. Good luck with the babies and keep us posted as to how your goo gang are getting on. If you've any questions just ask, there will always be someone here who can give you advice ... Oh also meant to say i'm sure everything will be fine and mum will look after babies well but if your worried that she's not spending enough time with them then gently put your hand in nest to check babies feel warm enough and that their wee tummies feel full....

Okay we have 5 babies and I never took out dad because I didn't know the babies were here until last night. It's probably too late by now if anything happened. My cage is covered in hardware cloth so the babies can't escape. I'm guessing the parents are feeding them and keeping them warm while I'm not looking in, because they still look warm and healthy. I've been giving the parents pellets, carrot sticks, and some rodent biscuits. I'm actually not even sure when they were born. They are awfully large for newborns and are all dry. A few of them even come out of the nest and explore. Here's a picture of their nest. It is deeper than it appears.

U know they can be easily 1-2 days old. Degu babies are born with open eyes and able to walk around. I would still separate dad for about 2-3 days. It's worth the shot.

Okay they are still alive and well. They all come out of the nest every once in a while and play around, it's absolutely ADORABLE! I've caught Mama Mimi letting them suckle once so far. My plans for them are to separate mom and the girl babies into one colony and dad and the boys into another. Does this sound like a good plan?

Your little one really are adorable. It is ok for them to run around and climb the cage bars, but the mesh on levels should be covered (with cardboard, lino....) because the mesh can hurt their delicate feet ( not just babies but adult as well) and cause condition named bumblefoot.

THey are truly adorable!!
I have to second Ady . . . your mesh floors are a hazzard to the good health of all your degus little feet. The foot infection known as bumblefoot is extremely painful and takes a while to heal, and is firmly connected to the presence of mesh flooring within the cage. Covering the mess over with grass mats, lino tiles, ceramic tiles, or replacing them with wooden levels are several different approaches you can take.

Okay I will have to make a project out of it. I'm thinking about building them a bigger cage anyways. I want to build one that looks like a cubby shelf where they can go through each individual room.

WOW!! Sounds like a really cool idea!! Just make sure that any surfaces that your degus can chew are either made of kiln dried pine (soft wood) or are reinforced with metal to protect them from those chompers. ;D I'm thinking that you would arrange it so that all the different little spaces were still visible from the front of the cage so that you have a good idea of what is going on in there? Of course that is my immediate thought of what I would do myself, you may well have a very different and creative idea. I look forward to seeing it!!

LOL! I think you have hit on some very appropriate names for personality characteristics that are apparently very clear. I love them!!

Well the only clear ones are the one that's always wandering away from the group and the one that is always making noises.
