This morning I was woken up at half 6 by Sausage. He was (what can only be described as) chirping non stop. I couldn't do anything to stop it. I fed them all a treat, picked him up out the cage, checked their water and food (both full) I just couldn't figure it out. He obviously wasn't in pain because he was running around like normal just chirping. After a few minutes I couldn't think of anything to stop it so I just left them to it and sat by the cage talking to them. He started calming down after about 5 minutes and eventually just started occasionally (very high pitched) squeaking. I'm pretty new to degus so I wanted to know if this was normal? I felt so helpless and the other degus didn't seem to be affected. It seemed sort of like he had the hiccups because with every squeak his ears twitched.
He's done it a couple of times now normally lasting 5-10 minutes but I didn't know this forum existed when it happened last so I couldn't ask about it.
Is this normal?

It is possible that Sausage was . . . cleaning himself. Male degus are very attentive to the cleanliness of their man bits, and it is not uncommon that following a session of intensive cleaning, they will bark what is known as the mating bark, which always follows a successful mating. So . . . there ya go?

as DC has said, it sounds like the mating bark. male degus are known to tell the world that they have had some pleasure...either by self satisfaction or mating with a female lol they tend to bark when they have successfully achieved, well..................im sure you understand what i mean ;D typical males realy!!! are you completely sure his cage mates are all male??? if so then you have no worries!!!
