im just about to pick up the kids from school but before i leave i thought id ask a quick question in regards to the daddy?!
right, my babies are 3 weeks old tomorrow, 20 days today... ive read that its possible that willow could become pregnant again, obviously i do NOT want this to happen so, when would be the best time to separate chocs again? i really dont want to do this to the poor man as he loves the babies but im not willing for another pregnancy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi nuttz, i had advice about this from Fred and fuzzymum .. fussymum witnessed her two mating on day 21 and is almost positive that Nancy is expecting again.. Fred has found 2 cases on this forum where degus have become pregnant on or around day 21.. as my pups are still so weak i will probably only remove dad for a day or two around the 21st day then put him back till the pups are weened... Since i've put him back in pumpkin has been doing really well with the pups unlike when she was by herself...
Hope this helps a wee bit..

Basically after giving birth she will get back to her 21 days cycle (First 2 days fertile, following 19 days not fertile), so on 22nd day after birth she should be fertile again. Also lenght of the cycle can be different in different females and there's a theory that lactating supres fertility so she won't get pregnant til her next cycle (6 weeks after giving birth). I would personally remove the dad today. Also there hasn't been any confirmed cases of degus becoming pregnant again 3 weeks after birth. We all waiting for Nancy if she is or not

ok, thank-you madhoose, ady and fred.. all so very confusing, i shall try my best to prevent any more babies so today MUST be the day, poor chocs! however, this is now leading me to be more confused than i was before...lol am i right in understanding that chocs can join willow and the babies again in a few days??? i was under the impression that he would stay on his own now until the babies were fully weaned, possibly 4-6 weeks??? but, if im right in understanding what has just been said, its safe to put him back in a few days time? oh dear...im really confused now...lol

can you briefly remind me what your plans are with the different sexes and potential neutering?

ok, obviously i have mummy and daddy (willow and chocs) i also have a lonely male goo (stumpy). we have 6 babies in which im pretty certain are 3 boys, 3 girls so my plans are... mummy and 3 baby girls in one cage daddy and 2 boys another cage and a little baby boy for companionship for stumpy, the lone goo! what do you think? does it sound ok? obviously this means another cage building project though for hubby...lol im hoping that stumpy will like his new little friend, ive shown him a couple through the cage bars and he seems really interested, dont want to push it though as the babies are still really small.

OK, then it's easy. Sorry, I could have looked it up but there's so much going on at the moment. My advice is to separate chocs and willow for good now (sorry little chap) and introduce the male pups to chocs and stumpy when they are 5-6 weeks old.

ok fred, thank you very much!!! this is what i first planned to do, although, the thought of chocs on his own isnt very nice, he just hates it thank you very much, and BTW... do you think my plans are ok? i know, probably not ideal, but im hoping all will work out well in the end?! if it wasnt for losing chips in june due to a fight with chocs i wouldnt be in this situation, oh well...lol

Your plans sound fine to me I believe the risk of a conception at three weeks after birth to be small, but because willow is so young and had six pups, it's better not to take any risk at all.

I agree, your plan sounds like the best for all concerned!
I know it will be hard for poor Chocs on his own but he will then get 2 of his little boys forever, happy endings all round, fingers crossed!
