One of my two Degus is hardly eating, Nosey is one and a half years old and two days ago she started acting a bit strange. She was sleeping most of the day and as far as i know she didnt eat anyting that day. we tried to get her to come out with treats etc and even when her sister went in to see her she didn't acknoweldge her. Yesterday she came out and was eating little bits of straw and was drinking ok, she went on her wheel and seemed to be a bit more lively. but she still didnt eat any nuggets and was napping a bit more than usual. Today she has been doing more of the same. just bits of straw but i gave her some carrot and she ate bits of that. she has been on the wheel a bit more and when i cleaned the cage out, she was running on her wheel again. but up to now she is still having no nuggets and very little straw/carrot. when we try to give her a treat she just turns away. she is mainly sitting in her house now and is really not herself. she was like this a few months ago when she escaped from her cage and had a fall. it took her about a week to come round. but she hasn't had a fall this time. I'm wondering if she has got a cold or has maybe hurt her teeth as she is a bar biter. her teeth do look ok though. I had allot of great advice from everyone last time when she had her fall. Thanks in advance, Dan.

Sounds like she hasn't been eating much for a few days now. You can try this . . . deguworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=health&action=display&thread=6023 . . . but I would put it together as soon as you can if you want to use it. The next thing I suggest is that you go to the vet with her as soon as you can. If she has an infection, it could be a respiratory infection which is serious and needs attention as quickly as possible. These can be hard to treat successfully, so you need to jump on it as soon as you can. Let us know how things are going for you, please.

That food recipe sounds great. but i don't have all those ingredients untill i can get to a shop in the morning. I have some degu friendly foods Dried parsley, carrot, brocolli, corn and sunflower seeds. is there anything i could make with these? i dont have wholemeal flour. just plain white flour. i will get the proper ingredients tomorrow but is there anything i could make with the ones i have just for tonight? Thanks again, Dan.

Update!! think we might know what the problem is.. Not 100% though. Nosey decided to bite her wheel for the first time in a few days. It was really delicate biting, not like her usual aggressive biting. She then jumpped back and shook her head then started rubbing her face. So i'm thinking with her not eating any hard foods and only the hay, that she has maybe damaged her teeth. She is currently getting hand fed straw and eating away. I'm not sure if straw is going to be enough to get her energy up.. Any ideas would be great, Thanks again.

If she has damaged her teeth or jaw, she will have great dificultly consuming hard pellet feeds. One idea would be to soften her food by adding water and mashing up the pellets so she could consume without using her sensitive teeth.
High energy foods like Oats would also be helpful in giving Nosey a boost. The most important thing is to keep her eating. Once the degu stops eating, even for a few days, weight will drop quickly and chances of survival and recovery are greatly diminuished.
Keep her belly full with various soft foods and bring her to the vet as soon as possible. The vet will be in a better position to diagnose and recommend a course of action.
Hope this helps... Please keep us updated on Nosey's condition.

Thanks. I'll give that a go. This morning she ate half a nugget! So pleased she gave it a try. So once she was finished, i gave her some dried broccoli and she munched it down. So a bit of progress today.

It could also be that she is having difficulty with her molars, which can over grow or the roots and begin to grow through the bones into eye sockets or out the bottom of the lower jaw. Naturally these are painful conditions and will lead to less eating. Molars that aren't being worn down and are getting too long can be reduced by your Vet. It really wouldn't hurt to have your Vet look at her just to be sure.

Thanks for all the advice. She has been so much better today. She ate a few nuggets, some corn and a few treats Today. She has also been drinking fine and doing her usually 100mph on the wheel. She has had a few more naps than usually but not half as much as she has been. Im thinking she has probs just hurt jaw or something but not too bad.
