I was sure that degus chew away their own nails if they're too long. Now I don't know anymore. last day I came home I saw a little spot of blood on the shelf and Sefi got hurt paw just a bit above the nail. I think that can be because nail stuck in a fleece bed, I can't figure out what else could happen.
For now I cleaned their cage completely and wash the paw with saline watter.
Well, wound is not big and it doesn't bother her, but I don't want it to happen again. I'm asking you here what should I do. Try to cut their nails - I don't think they are too long a lot or remove fleece from the cage? If that's not it, I don't want to put them through stress while cutting nails. I have found that kind of injury explanation on degutopia. Maybe anyone else know what else is possible to happen to fix that. I don't think Bambi did that since they get along well. I'm guessing what happened but really - I don't know.

One of my boys Scrat lost one full nail. I think that he had caught it in his bedding too. It healed very quickly and didnt bother him. I wouldnt worry to much about it happening again unless you have damaged/holey fleece. It was probably one of those freak one off things.

Fleece looks just fine, but I'll change it with fake fur anyways I have a feeling this is less likely to cause injury. Does any of you cutting their nails? I hate to see my sweeties are hurt Doesn't matter if they don't show pain.

I cut one of Jadzia's nails when she first got here from the shop, it was so long it resembled a hook and it made her foot get caught in the wheel. So I had my boyfriend (with heavy gloves on just in case) hold her gently and used a large toenail clipper to snip the end of the nail off. It was very quick and easy and Jadzia didn't even notice. After that both my goo's nails have stayed short, but they do run on my stone floor for at least an hour every day. Have you tried putting a stone somewhere they sit often? That might help keep their nails short

I didn't done that yet, but it works a shot. I will try to do that. I'm not really sure if nails are too long, but it can't hurt to have a stone in there:) Thanks!
