Hi, just a short insight to animal keeping in Swiss pet shops. I went there some weeks ago and made photos. It is the biggest zoo shop chain here in Switzerland. They improved their keeping some years ago and now work together with the national most important animal rescue organisation STS (Schweizer Tierschutz). Here the rabbit cage: ...and a cage for hamsters: Additional pics I have uploaded here: www.flickr.com/photos/degupedia/sets/72157627940351084/

Yes, it changed during the last 10-15 years. I think it could be a good idea to see positive examples showing that a better housing for small mammals is possible, also in Zoo shops.

Those are indeed lovely habitats. It is encouraging to see pet shops that cooperate with shelters and strive to keep the animals they sell in suitable environments. These enclosures also go a long way into educating people on how to house the animals and what the setup and cage should look like.
Thanks for sharing with us David.

Yes it is encouraging to see that it is possible to give future animal keepers positive examples of an appropriate cage.
To clarify STS has no own animals. They engage for better laws, against cruel animal keeping (livestock, zoos, circus, lab etc.). They also inform the public, give advices for appropriate animal keeping etc.
edit: I mistaken used the word "rescue"... I ment that STS is an animal protection organisation.
Btw. animal rescue corners for the placement of shelter animals is very uncommon here in Switzerland and Germany. I've never seen something like that here.

It is good to know that improvements can be achieved. I wish the RSPCA here would be a bit more interested in small furries.
Do the pet shops also offer better information to prospective buyers? It would be a shame if they showed the hamster in a suitable environment and then sold these plastic tube monstrosities.
Do you know what the situation in Austria is? If I understand it correctly, pet shops there are now obliged by law to keep their animals in large cages. I would be very interested to know how that works out.

No, not in Austria. I haven't any connections to this country.
I don't know. The selled accessories are in general suitable, of course with some exceptions.
The law has changed some months ago and is actually more restrictive... yes, but I don't know in detail what it means for pet shops. The deal between the zoo shop chain and STS lasts longer, thus this law has, if even, only a minor effect on the animal keeping. For me it seems to be a prestige decision, good animal keeping is good for the image of the company. I don't know. I never bought animals here.
