My male degu Olly is having some kind of problem, I think Joe may have bitten off part of his cone! It looks kind of gross down there, I can see the end of his... thingy. Just before it happened Olly was "doing something to himself" then he went to the bottom of his cage, was sat there and suddenly I heard a huge commotion, loads of screaching and then olly came and sat at the top of the cage, I put my finger on the top and viewed him as he stretched up, and to my surprise there it was, what looks like half a cone and the end of his thingy. I have tried to get a picture but I can't, it's not bleeding and doesn't seem to be causing him a huge amount of pain, he keeps licking it I think, putting his head down there. He's still eating (gave him some food) and running around on his wheel etc. I'm kind of scared and my god I feel sorry for him

Hi, is it really bitten off? Can u see raw bloody tissue at the end? Or is it pinky tissue, just hanging out of the cone?

Looks to me like he's got infection in his thing. Is the cone swollen and red? Is there any white puss coming out?

Looks to me like he's got infection in his thing. Is the cone swollen and red? Is there any white puss coming out? It literally happened under an hour ago, it can't be infected that fast? No it's not swollen and no puss. By the way the dark pink part isn't the cone, the light pink bit is.

I meant there could be infection in his thing or bladder, making his thing a little swollen so he can't quite pull it back so it started to hang out of the cone a bit. Does it make sense? Definitely wait when someone more experienced will comment, but I would say put some lubricant or Vaseline on the top, it will keep it moist and make it easier for it to move. If it's infection you will need to take him to vet. Or his thing could be prolapsed. Not sure what causes that or how to treat it.

I'm not sure, you could be right, but then again his cone looks REALLY short, usually it's much longer. You could be onto something there though.

His thingy isn't swollen at all, I just had another look. The end looks slightly pale, as if it's been torn but at the same time doesn't it's so weird. My camera is really crap and probably wouldn't pick it up.

when he grooms himself there now, does his whole thing goes out (as it normally does when they groom themself there) or is it kind of stuck there?

Well, before it happened it was fully out, I saw it (so gross). But IDK about now, he seems to just be licking it without it coming out, I don't think he's trying to get it out though. I think he's just cleaning the end.

I think keeping eye on him if he is able to wee would be good. Is there any change? That picture u posted, if I understand correctly, does it look like the cone is a bit widen (maybe shrinked in lenght) and at the end is kind of open and his thing can be seen in that opening, maybe hanging 1mm out or so?

It's not changed at all, it's so strange. The width is the same, it's just like the end has been bitten off, so weird. Also yes it is his thingy hanging out, maybe less then 1mm.

I had what sounds like a similar issue with my Stan a few months ago. His 'part' looked less pointy at the end, it just didn't somehow look right, IYKWIM. I think it was slightly prolapsed, his 'part' hadn't retracted back into place properly.
I was really concerned, he seemed to be paying more attention to it than normal as well. I kept checking it and it didn't seem to be getting any better. I asked my vet for some advice and he suggested applying some lubrication with a cotton bud to see if that helped it on it's way. I managed to apply some lubrication and it did eventually rectify itself, whether it was the lubrication that helped or it just fixed itself I don't know.
Does that sound similar to your issue? It really would be very helpful for you to get a picture if at all possible...

Hi Cherpi? Any change? My boy had the same but on second day it was hanging out about 0.5 cm, I push it slightly back using lubricant and took him to vet, she managed to squeeze out of there some puss and gave me atb. It's probably not the same case with yours, but my vet was quite concern if he is able to wee so I think you could keep eye on that with Olly. Hope he gets better soon.

It's much better today, his cone is now fully covering it! It's still slightly bigger at the base but he seems to be doing much better. I haven't seen him touch it once. I'll be doing another check before bed. If it's the same I may add a tiny but of lubricant on the end to see if that helps at all.
