I put a cardboard box in the cage the other day assuming Pikachu and Dmitri would want to use it for a nest box; it wasn't ideal and I have some others I'm going to use instead, but it was all I had at the time. However, all they did was strip layers off it and carry it over to the nest they've made for themselves... they did find it fun, kept climbing it and chewing it, etc - but they don't see it as a nest box. I have another box prepared which I think will work better but I don't know whether to put some tissue/hay in there for them, or if I should give them some and let them put it in?
And if they take all the tissue and just drag it to their nest and don't bother with the box, should I assume they don't need one?
(Sorry if this is in the wrong section)

Degus can be very funny when it comes to nesting. Mine rarely nest where I expect them to. They will also change the location of their nest without any reason that us humans can fathom. I would pop a box in the cage whenever you have one as they may decide that it looks good and if not they will have fun ripping it up.
