so I've taken Eric to the vets, she examined his teeth and his tongue and said they all look fine and healthy!, looks like the blood in his mouth came from some puncture wounds and scratches on his cheek and chin! she has given me some antibiotics and recovery food to give him over the next few days and hopefully he will start eating properly again.
i tried to reintegrate him with the other two and immediately he started fighting with the 2nd largest Bernard to the point where he scratched Bernards face and drew blood. I'm gonna keep them seperated for now and i'll try to introduce them like we did when we first got Bernard and Manny 6 months ago.
thankfully my cage is still divided so i can quite easily separate them, i'll keep swapping them over till tomorrow, then i'll try an introduction in the play room

Great to hear that apparently it was something relatively minor. Yes, it's a shame that you have to go through the introduction process again but it sounds so much more positive than yesterday. Hopefully Eric will be back to normal very quickly, keep us updated.

yes is it as relief that he doesnt need any surgery or dental work, I just hope that he takes to eating and drinking again soon, altho squirting antibiotics into his mouth and watching him lick his lips is hilarious

I'm glad it isn't from teeth trouble! Sorry that it is a result from fighting though, that's too bad. You may want to give them a little more time apart so that Eric can heal up a bit before doing any reintroducing.

deguconvert, I wish i had read that bit of advice about an hour ago! could have saved me a lot of grief, I tried to introduce them and didnt have a great result, for about 20 minutes they both milled about and then Eric started to follow Bernard around, then after a few minutes of back turning and failed attempts at mounting each other they erupted into a serious scrap, foolishly I threw my hand in the middle and got an almighty bite from Eric, I managed to separate them and luckily they dont seem to have any cuts or scratches. I guess its back to square one, d**n it!

OWWWW!! So sorry about your bite! A question for you? How old are Bernard and Manny now? It kind of sounds like they are in the adolescent stage? That is on average between the ages of 3 - 18 months of age, depending on the degu. Some start later, or early, and others end early or later. Anyway, it is a time of upheaval. If this is so, you will need to carefully consider your strategy for reuniting them.
