so as i said in my previous thread, I found eric with blood around his mouth, i cleaned him off and the bleeding has definatly stopped but now he doesnt seem to be eating, chewing, nibbling or chattering his teeth as he usually would.
I dont think hes totally broken his jaw as ive seen him do a half yawn and open his mouth to squeek, also his teeth seem fine.
has anybody heard of anything similar to this happening?
i'll be taking him to the vets in the morning but i dont know how much good that will do, i never seem to read good things about vets with degus

I wonder if he is having trouble with his molars, which can be clipped, but the degu needs to be sedated to do this. I am also wondering if he has injured his tongue some how and that is what is bleeding. Molar issues can cause tongue injures, so they can be related.
If you can, soften some of his food with water and offer him that, if he can eat it, it will help keep his strength up until you can get him to the Vet. You may need to do this a couple times at least, just to be sure you are getting enough food into him.

I agree with what DC has said. Molars seem a likely candidate for the problem. As I wrote in another thread earlier today, I have seen quite a few relevant posts on deguforum..de recently, and it his important to keep his energy levels up while he may have problems feeding. Plenty of treats if he is taking them and don't worry about the “not too much” warnings for the time being. If your vet doesn't come up with an alternative diagnosis, I would urge him/her to do an Xray to check the teeth.

I've managed to get him to eat some squashed peas and oats! And he's done some bar biting, so it looks like he's on the mend, still gonna take him to the vets tomorrow
