Are you able to take a few pictures of the cupboard and post them here? Then we might be able to advise you better!

Hello ! I am so happy to hear about your plans to transform this cupboard into a degu enclosure. As smithomatic mentions...it would be easier for us to offer advice after seeing the cupboard in question.
Both mesh and glass are popular choices for the front of the cage. They both have advantages and disadvantages. Mesh allows maximum areation and air circulation in the cage. It is also cheaper and much lighter than glass. Without a deep base however, bedding, straw, food and hay will be thrown out the cage right through the mesh doors.
Glass on the other hand is much heavier and more expensive. This being said, glass is generally thought to be more aesthetically pleasing due to the clear view and maximum visibility it provides to the inside the cage. For me the most positive thing about glass or plexiglass is that it keeps things from being flung out the cage.
In a wooden cage/enclosure, you will be using lots of bedding and hay. The glass front ensures that these remain in the cage, even when the degus engage in a burrowing and digging frenzy.
They are both great choices and both are equally proven.

Nightwish is correct! One of the most important things for me was keeping all the mess inside the cage as they dig and throw bedding around, the plexiglass I use sorted me right out for this! I note also that this will be in your lounge? In this case plexiglass (or glass) might be better as you probably dont want your lounge to be full of hay! Do show some piccies though, I might be wrong
