Hi, I'm looking into getting degus soon and I want to make sure that I can get the best home possible for them. I can get hold of a large (48 inch) dog crate for a relatively good price, I was wondering if it would be possible to convert this into a degu cage with the addition of wooden shelves and toys. I think it currently has a plastic tray in the base but above the metal bottom, but this can be removed and secured with wood as well. Thanks in advance

What are all the measurements . . . length, depth, and height? Knowing those is important as it will help us be able to advice you it there is enough room all around.
As to whether it can be converted . . . yes it can. I have converted a dog crate to be a travel cage for our degus. It works very well, but you absolutely must replace the plastic tray with wood if you able. They will destroy the plastic in no time flat, and then they will be able to escape.

Oh yes, sorry! The dimensions of the ones I have seen are 122cm length x 71cm width x 81cm height, would that be big enough? From what I have learnt about degus so far, plastic is a definite no-no, so it would be gone straight away!
