I fully agree, it should be possible to respect such kind of differences. And in fact, not only the size matters. Even for laboratory animals researchers proved that enrichment for small cages (so called Makrolon boxes) reduced abnormal behaviour significantly. Thus the size is only one (but not the only) aspect for a degu-friendly keeping. We also had this topic in the german community... the strong focus on cm and the correct size can block or hinder the view to other important aspects. In my opinion degu keeping has to be regarded as whole: the needs of the degus are of importance, but also the owner. A degu-friendly keeping also always have to to respect the needs of the owner. If he isn't able to care well for his animals, he will affect the well-being of his animals.
