I took the plunge after putting it off and off and started to build my degus a cage! I went out yesterday and got the wood and today I put it together. I think because ive never really been great at DIY that I put it off for so long, but I glad I started as im pretty impressed so far! Its 35 inches in length Its 40 inches in height Its 24 inches deep Ive got the shell done (screenshot attached!) and now need to sort the floor, shelves, doors and lighting out. For the floor im going to lay floortiles and secure the edges with kiln dried timber. I will line the shelves with the same. Im going to put two shelves inside and for the front either perspex of actual glass. Probably be perspex to start off with! For the lighting, I was going to use this > www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260768604746 Just wanted peoples views. Would the two 30cm strips be bright enough? Edit - Forgot to say that their current cage is the thickets cage they sell in P@H Attachments:

They'll be great . . . but I would perhaps have four on hand just incase you want to put some more in. I better put in though that I have four of those over my counter tops in the kitchen, and I now wish I had another four in there. LOL! So . . . could be you're just hearing my inner desire for more light in my kitchen.

Hello daveuk ! Very glad to hear and see this new project you have embarked on ! Welcome onboard One thing I can say for certain is that your degus will be very glad to leave their Thickets cage for this new cage ! It seems as though you have everything planned nicely. Well done and please keep us posted...and more photos of course ;D

Thank you for your comments, I'll keep you updated with pics Im surprised at how reasonable the costs have been! All the wood only cost £33. Managed to get it cut out of one sheet at Homebase. The chap there was pretty good and didnt charge us for all the extra cutting he did, otherwise that would have been another £4 on the total. Just ordered the lights. Ordered th starter pack and two extra striplights so 4 x 30cm lights in total. Any tips on where to buy the perspex in the UK? Will the cut it to size in Homebase/B&Q like they do with wood?

www.acrylic-online.co.uk/basket.php?del=0Best place I've found. I used them. Just order everything you want in one go as delivery is £8.00 no matter how much you order (I think!). Or £8.00 is the minimum they charge for p@p.

Wow, this looks brill, got a few questions though lol, what did you use for lighting in the end? I was thinking those little spotlights that you sort of stick on and press to turn on so there would be no wires, and also did you use amies suggestion for the doors? If so how much did they cost and how easy were the runners to fit? Oh and what sort of wood did you use to buils it out of? £33 seems a very reasonable price for the whole lot! Thanks in advance
