I was wondering if I could use lemon juice to combat some of the odor in the cage, caused by them peeing on bare wood.

Hi, I don't consider them as toxic, and less aggressive than vinegar. But I am not sure that it will work as degus tend to pee even more when they mark their territory. I would opt for new wood levels which are protected from infiltrating urine, as well as bedding which will absorb most of the pee.

I use this www.urineoff.com/SA.phpIt doesn't completely remove it, they still pee on the same spot, but maybe it helps a little bit.

Thanks guys! I already use plenty of bedding, and also line with several layers of newspaper, but they always tear it up in their favorite spots. This causes the room to smell of pee when the cage is still fairly clean... I am having a new cage built as we speak, this one will be lined with vinyl flooring to prevent this from happening. If there is any extra flooring left over, it will be used in the old cage as well.
