hey all, hopefully someone will be able to help me with this.. I've had my goo's for just under a year now and all has been fine but for the last couple of weeks 1 of my boys has been making constant high pitched squeaks every morning around 3am and he doesn't stop until you either talk to him or turn the light on! does anyone else have this problem or does anyone else know why he's doing it? x

I have the same situation with my boys. In the morning they are sexually very active. If they are "finished" beep them. All are to hear it. That is completely normally. That would be a possible explanation.

This is not the first time this . . . hmmm . . . shocking, mid-nightime-slummbers call has been asked about. As Oldbiddy says, it may well be that one of your males is "cleaning" his bits and then gives the successful mating call afterward. Although, usually this is an involuntary reaction, and will not stop for anything but the passage of time (usually about 20 minutes).
If your boy stops once you speak to him, or turn on a light, I am thinking that he must be feeling it is time for your attention in one form or another. Do you have a routine that you follow with the degus at bedtime each night, and then in the morning as well?

Yeah i do have a routine with them! I normally get them out the cage for a while so they can have a little play and stretch their legs a bit then straight after they go back in the cage I turn the light off but keep the tv on so they know its nearly my bed time then after about an hour when I go to bed I always say good night to them and then we get up at half 5 every morning together which is when they get a little bit of attention and feeding and fresh water before I go to work. But lately the routine seems to include getting up at 3am to talk to the degu making the noise then going back to sleep! (I live in a studio flat so they are constantly in the same room as me so I give them a lot of attention when I'm at home)

Hmmm! Well! I suspect it has to do with some degu thinking it is time to get up, or have more attention. Do you have a privacy screen? I wonder if putting something like that between them and a view of you would help? Or a cover of some sort . . . that would be safe should for them to chew if they should pull it into the cage.
