I think this is also interesting for chinchilla owner. We had a discussion about pellets and I gave them a short overview over the development of pellet feeding:

As background information, I'm familiar with chinchilla keeping, support a german chinchilla forum and I also made investigations into old chinchilla breeding literature. In Germany for long times it seemed impossible to feed chinchillas without pellets. But increasingly occuring health problems forced several owner to rethink their Chinchilla diets. In fact most chins took advantage of pellet shortage or even a complete avoidance. All in all it was hard work, but we learned a lot about pellets, food industry and natural feeding.
I hope I'll find the time to give insights to this issue. There is also a lot of information in older chinchilla breeding literature (books and breeder journals).
