As I went to feed tonight I saw that Rosa (app. 14 y. old female) had facial swelling. Her cheeks, lips and chin are swollen - very symmetric end I´m fairly positive that it´s not an abcess because when I press a finger in the swelling, it leaves a mark for a little while untill it evens out - does that make sense? She is not 100% allright but still, she runs around and eats and chews the branches (and furniture) and her poo is totally normal.
She has been out of the cage and running with her friend for a couple of hours now.
I´m not sure when this started - so I don´t know how fast it developed.
Has anyone tried something like this? And what did you do? And what caused it?
Had she been a dog, I would suspect an allergic reaction to fx. insect-bite. But all we have is moskitos (and not the kind with malaria etc. I live in Denmark).
I will of course take her to the vet for a thourough check tomorrow (and to rule out cheek-teeth-problems).

I am not a chinchilla moderator, but am concerned for your girl. Did you see the vet today and what has resulted? What you describe sounds a lot like pitting edeema, which is water retention that can be serious, but I have no idea why she should have it localized to her face like this. I hope she is OK.

Yes exactly - pitting edeema. Didn´t know the english term. We went to the vet yesterday and the edeema is generalized - and not localized to the face. The vet tried to draw blod but because of the edeema, he couldn´t. But then again - the symptoms indicate kidneyfailure... So maybee the blodtest wouldn´t give any other answers but I had hoped for blodtest results.. Just to be sure.. The prognosis is grave... She is on furix (furosemid) diuretic an I inject her twice a day. As long as she is happy and eating, she stays here with me and her friend Leo. But it´s unfortunately probably just a matter of days now... I miss her allready and I fear the reaction from Leo when Rosa is gone... They have lived together all of Leos life (10 years) and they are the happiest and most harmonic chinchilla-couple I have ever had!!

Rosa is still here. So far so good. She is still happy and active and eating so we are crossing our fingers and hoping that she sticks around for a while yet. Attachments:

Rosa died yesterday... I had to send her over the Rainbow. The day before yesterday, she wasn´t feeling well, then she got a little better but yesterday she wasn´t allright at all. So I put her to sleep in the comfort of her own home and me by her side all the way and she was so ready to go... It was so peacefull and quiet - just the way it´s suppose to be and even though I hate to do it, I´m also glad that I have the possibility to do it so that they avoid the stress of transportation and strange sounds and smells. So now we have to find a routine without our Rosa, Leo and I. He knew what was going on - had been cuddling with her in the house in the bottom of the cage for the last couple of days - so I hope he said his goodbyes. Here´s the last picture I took of Rosa - just a few hours before I send her off - she looks so tired, but still wanted to eat some sunflower-seeds and roses... RIP Rosa - we will never ever forget you - you live on in our hearts (and in Loppe, your beautifull son). Jeg elsker dig. Attachments:
