hi im looking for some advice on my female 5 year old degu. She has had two companions so far, a female and afterward a male. Although they never bred she was very close to the male (who was blind) and when he died 18months ago we didnt think it would be wise to try to replace him with another companion. Recently however, when looking into a new cage for her, we have been reading everywhere that it is essential for their well being for them to have companions. Any advice??

Please look for another 1-2 degus, age 3-6 years. Degus really need companions, to relax together, to groom, to play and especially to feel safe and protected. Even if we spent 10 hours a day with them, we never could replace another degu. Our degus we have at home can live 8 years and longer (I know of degus who are told to be 10 or even 12; I am not so sure about the latter one), so a 5 year old degu is in its best years. A friend of mine has a couple of quite old degus. When she got them, each of them was 7-8 years old. Introduction was quite easy. A couple of weeks ago one died at the age of 9 and she looked for another older degu. Besides, really old degus are very cute, they are so special!!! These degus are little personalities. Please, look for another degu (a lady or a neutered male) for your little lady. She really deserves living a degu life; and this is only possible together with another friend.
