Long and short of it is that we have two "girls" that have had two babies while we have been at work today!!!
Sadly one of the babies looks as if hasnt made it ... not moving around or anything. I know I have to remove it but I dont want to scare the other baby or annoy my 'girls'
Is it common for babies not to make it? How many babies do they generally have? How long can it take for them all to be born?
I have an appointment at vets tomorrow for one of them who has quite poorly feet from fighting over the weekend and now gonna take the other and the baby with me.
My vets have been very helpful told me that we dont have to seperate them dad wont hurt the baby but obviously if we worried about more babies yes dad should be moved.
We think the degu that is hurt is dad as the other looks a bit messy down there. I am concerned that they she has had one that hasnt made it what are the chances of there being more to come..... I am going to vets tomorrow but any advice would be good
Sharon
Ps - we've only had these about 3 1/2 months so still very new to things!!

You can take the dead pup out, it won't cause distress to any of your other degus. I think you should keep an eye on the one you think is the mother . . . she may not have delivered all her pups. It's a probably a good thing that you are taking all of them to the vet tomorrow, as they can look at the mom to be sure that she isn't carrying any more pups inside. (I feel a little unsure about what I just said . . . I'm hoping that other members will chime in here and those with greater knowledge will indicate if this is a problem for Mom and pup.)
You need to know that pups are unable to regulate their body temperature until they about 3-4 weeks of age. This means they can get cold and can't warm themselves up. So with this in mind, is there any way that you can take the nest with you to the Vets? You will want to make sure that Mom and pup are comfortable and feel secure.

Ive been reading through old posts here so feel a lot better about it then what I did. My o/h was very shocked and have given p@h a good talking to for selling us two girls....they are going to pay for our vets bill tomorrow give us a cage (not sure on size) so we can split them and bedding etc. I'll let you know if this all comes good!! its very exciting that my babies have had a baby!!

About two weeks ago, one of my four "female" degus (that I adopted from the local animal shelter a couple of months ago) miscarried. Same scenario: come home from work and find the four baby-bodies scattered around the top part of the cage. Called my vet and he told me that she might give birth to more, and that it was better not to handle her or to bring her to him unless I see signs of a further problem. He said the less stress on her, the better. So far, she's doing fine and there haven't been any more dead or live babies. We've identified the male and removed him (he's in a cage right next to the one with the others), and we are keeping a close eye on all three of the actual females – Azure (who had the miscarriage), Lilac (who I think might be pregnant), and Peridot.
I too complained to the animal shelter and they have allowed me to borrow one of their cages and offered to take Sean back if I wanted to return him. I want to keep him so I plan to wait the next three months, see if there are any more babies. If not, I will have him neutered so he can go back in the big cage with his sisters. If there are babies, I will then invest in another large cage and house all the males together in it.
Please keep us updated. I am especially curious to find out whether or not your degu has any more babies and how the baby is doing.

Went to the vets yesterday and she thinks that we do have two girls...So this you can imagine confused me a little bit but then I checked the dates and it seems that Onion might have been pregnant when we got herfrom P@H!!!
Pickle, the babay, is sooooo gorgeous. (I keep meaning to post pics of cheese and onion so will add pics of them all soon) She (we dont know what it is but habbit we keep calling it she or her!) has been exlporing the cage this morning. She is moving around fairly quickly actually. Any advice how old before we can sex her? I forgot to ask the vet!!
Vet checked onion over and she doesnt have any more pups to come -which is a little sad coz two would have been amazing - I like things to be even!.

omg!!! i bet it was a real shock.
Some people can sex babies quite early, but i;ve got to be honest, and say, even though i;ve kept goo;s for the last 3 years, i still like to check, then check, then check again lol.
Just bear in mind, that male goo's can reproduce, from quite young, some people say around 5 weeks, so just make sure you have gotten him/her sexed so you don't have anymore surprises, oh and we want pics!!

Any advice how old before we can sex her? You can do that at a very early age. If you can get a close-up pic from the baby's "bits" (without stress for it or mum of course), that would be helpful. And of course we would like some "normal" pics too
