Hi guys I'm new here, I'll try to sum this up for you quick: I need tips on how to build a large degu cage out of wood. I've looked at some guides online and such but I'm not a woodworker. I'm not very good at it and I don't think I have any friends who are to be honest Are there any tutorials online that step-by-step show me how to make a cage? What kind of wood should I use? How much wood will I need for a 160x50x100 cage? Thanks Edit: Oh, and what nifty little toys and branches, and houses etc. would a degu enjoy and be very happy with?

Hello,
I am currently also working on building a new home for my Degus. I did have one that I built similar to nightwishravens' but unfortunately 2 of the degus chewed a hole in it and ran away.. luckily they came back. Currently I use plexiglass and 2 plastic runners for my door to the cage. I am looking to make one using glass and steel tracks for the glass to slide on, does anyone know where I can get these sliding tracks (they need to be quite long!), any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

the bottom panel that holds all the bedding in and the slider which the glass sits on ( the track for the window is on top of the wooden panel) , Im at work at the moment but may try to post a picture when I get home tonight

My cage has PVC runners for the glass doors and in 8 months I have only gone through 2 sets of runners!
I'd recommend lining them with steel to stop the lil furry devils chewing them

Solid metal runners are of course far more suitable as they are chew proof...but when using plastic/pvc runners, it is advisable to fit a thick strip of wood in front or to line it with steel as dingle87 mentioned.
Plastic sliders are obvious targets for the degus, so they need to be protected.

Where can I aquire said plastic runners from? Ive had an idea how to reinforce them with steel but if anyone can post a link to actual steel runners that would be great

@ smithomatic I purchased my runners and materials at the hardware store. But since I live far away from most members it is hard for me to recommend or give advice as to where to purchase certain items. Here is a post from another topic that you may find helpful.

I buy my runners from Ebay (Ranch House Cages) but they are PVC. I haven't found steel ones yet.
