Hi, my name is David, I'm from Switzerland and keep degus since 1999. I'm administrator of a german chinchilla forum, write for german pet magazines and I'm an active member of the german degu community. Thus pets (especially degus and chins) are for me a well known topic. But I'm interested in the exchange of ideas especially in this international environment. A chinchilla keeper pointed me to this forum, but I forgot it for a while until a recent discussion in the german community to share our experience. Well, some years ago I was already active in a french forum, but I lost the motivation to maintain this exchange, for me it was difficult to write in french. English I'm used to speak and read, but it's perhaps a bit basic. Apropos my degus: For several years I kept them indoors, but three years ago I could realize a dream: my degus actually live in an outdoor enclosure during the warm seasons (April-October) and during the winter they have an indoor cage. Here are some impressions: The cage (in the background you can see the cage of our cavies):

Hi David and welcome to the forum For those who haven't been on German/Swiss sites, David is also behind the “Degu-Ratgeber” ( degu.re4.ch ), which is one my three favourite degu information sites that I have mentioned previously when collecting information e.g. for the safe woods list. I don't think there is anyone around who knows more about feeding degus! This brings me to a spontaneous idea which I may well come to regret (for time reasons ): David, is there any chance to make your Degupedia feeding articles available in English? I would be happy to do the basic translations and I am sure we can find some native speakers here to bring those into a correct and better readable shape.

Thank you Fred. Yes I am the author of the online practical guide (in german "Ratgeber") about degus also mentioned in this forum. Fred already mentioned the given thread. The idea was born in 2000, I learned HTML and created a simple practical guide about degus by copying one of the early german degu books. I enriched my guide with own experiences, but this creation was far away from an useful page. In 2003 I joined the german deguforum and proudly presented there my homepage. Well, they had many advices for me how to improve the page. But it was useful for me and in the following years I completely rewrote the guide and started to use literature and scientific publications. Later I gave up to update the guide because it is a lot of work and I started further projects consuming my time . Degupedia is one of this big issues, the chinchilla forum I also mentioned. That's a great idea, but you know my english is not so good and it is a big effort, especially because of the fact that the page is a dynamic wiki and in an ongoing flow. But I think a good approach would be to translate at least selected but important information. I think it's better to define small but realistic steps and wide them out if we can see, that we can handle them.

I think they would be great to give people an idea how exciting degu feeding can be. As I said, I can offer do do a rough (but factually correct) draft translation if someone else offers to do the polishing. I agree of course that it would also be helpful to get some other parts translated, in particular in those areas where the information available here is poor and sometimes incorrect. I'd be happy to help there as well (to the extent that time allows).

WOW! Welcome, David! I'm almost speachless . . . what a treasure trove you are, as well as all your fellow german forum members. I do look forward to the conversations and the knowledge you will be contributing to our UK based forum.

Merci beaucoup NightwishRaven. Ça me plais ici. J'ai déjà vu ton youtube channel il y a quelque temps et quelques vidéos de tes todons . @fred OK, that is a good idea. What is your intention, to translate all articles in sequence or would you prefer to translate on demand and only translate the summaries in a first step and let the community decide which article they are most interested in? For the other readers here, we speak about an online publication (in german) called "Degupedia Magazin" available as PDFs here (free access): www.degupedia.de/info/Degupedia_Magazin.html@dc Thanks. If you have any question to me or my degus, please ask . I don't know where I should start, there is so much stuff. But there are of course some issues I'm interested in to discuss them like the oak tannins story.
