Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself after lurking around for a few days now.
I recently brought 4 degus 2 boys 2 girls (2 cages, of course!) as a gift for my husband after some research I decided these were better than the Chinchila he wanted (after a day of having the degus he agreed with me! I brought them very cheaply off someone who no longer wanted them (i much prefer to give a home to a unwanted animal than buy 'new') long story short we have fallen in love with degus. Our 2 girls are Suzy and Alice (Alice named by my daughter who loves the Tim Burton movie!) and the boys Crash and Eddie (named after the possums(?) in Ice Age) although the boys we cant really tell apart just yet! I have no idea of ages as the lady before we had them only had them a week off someone else, they didnt even have names, though I think they are only youngish! Our girls are much tamer than the boys!
Since they came to us, in what I think were small cages with a plastic bottom (from I suspect pets at home) we upgraded the cages with lots of toys then we brought the boys a huge cage (as they started chewing the plastic, so they upgraded first). While hunting around the internet for a bargain cage for our girls I came across a lone Degu and instantly fell sorry for him and purchased him. He arrived tonight, I had hopes of eventually putting him with the boys, but the new boy, Reggie, is what I believe to be quite an old boy. The people he came from said he did have a brother but he died about a year ago. The poor little soul is in a, I think a rat cage with no toys, not even a wheel and he is much chunkier and even I can see he has Caterats (sp?). So do I dare entertain hopes that he will be able to join our boys? at the moment we have put his cage right next to the boys so they get to know each other. I read up all about introducing degus but Im not sure it will work with what seems to be such old and young? any help would be very gratefully received.
We also have 2 rabbits (Bunny who came first and Bugs who joined us a month ago! Really those were the names they came to us with, both were unwanted pets) 2 guinea pigs, Mater and Lightening. 3 syrian hamsters, Darth Hamster, Rapunzel and Captain Jack. 1 cat, Merlin. 1 husband and 3 children
