Hello! I got really upset today. I took out one of our female goo's, Lilith, to weigh her earlier. She is still fairly new to me, we adopted them from P@H because their previous owner didnt want them anymore. They are between 6-9 months we think. Anyway, i took her out, but she just seemed really panicky and jumped from my shoulder (im 5ft 7) and down onto the floor. I caught her fairly quick, but I noticed afterwards she had hurt her right eye and it was weeping some red fluid (not blood). And that just broke my heart. I felt so bad that she had gotten hurt trying to get away from me, I mean she came willingly out of the cage. I never grab for them. She is fine now, I've been watching her eye closely and she dont seem to be worried about it. And when I opened the cage again later she, like the others came willingly to me and wanted to come out.
But I just wonder what could have made her jump? It was only me in the room so I doubt she got scared. Why did she jump such a distance? Anyone have any ideas why they make such insane jumps every now and then?

the most unhelpful but probably most simple answer is "because they can". there are any number of reasons, a couple of which could be she slipped and then jumped to gain some sort of control over the fall or something spooked her perhaps.
I hope she is ok, keep an eye on her, 1 of the guys or girls with more injury experience will hopefully be able to explain the fluid but i'd be wary of her. Degus hide pain very well. but then they are also ridiculously resilient as proven by our resident jumper who survived from a first floor balcony onto concrete and is running round happy now... cant remember who that was...

the most unhelpful but probably most simple answer is "because they can". I was going to say the same thing I'm afraid! They jump because they can, no real rhyme or reason, just because they are degus! Fingers crossed she will be OK, but do just keep an eye on her like W8152 says. Most of my degus have had a slight fall at some point or another, never more than a couple of feet thankfully. Don't feel bad though, it certainly wasn't your fault, I'm sure most members on here have had a similar experience at some point. Keep us posted!

Thanks guys! Her eye seem fine now, I watched her as she sat down and cleaned it and it stopped weeping very quickly. But you never know, I'll deffo keep a close eye on it.
I just still feel horrible, even it is like you said, not really my fault. I spose I just have to keep a really close eye on them when I have them out of the cage even if its going to keep me on edge a little bit.
