I was just looked at all the different color varieties of degus.. And I saw the white patched agouti degus.. And theyre absolutely adorable. I was wondering If these degus were unhealthy because they were bred to have this color coat? I'd love a white patched degu.. But I would never want to support a breeder who breeds unhealthy degus by buying one.

Okay. I don't think I'd buy from a breeder then. If anything, even though im sure I'd rarely see any up for adoption, I'll adopt one if someone cant keep theirs. I still think their cute but I think I'll stick with my two boys for now thanks for the reply.

You can tell if a degu is more healthy genetics wise by tail length, the length of the whiskers and how consistent their coat is. I don't have time to go into more detail but like smux already said the different colours are usually through genetic mutations caused by bad breeding so even though they're all really cute (also a sandy coloured degu and a white degu which are rare) they're un healthy.
