My degu Scribble is usually very lively and runs around all over the place. He also normally runs to his sand bath straight away and he loves it. He is very tame. Today, we had him out, and he started off as normal, but after a minute, he started walking very weirdly, with his tummy flat against the floor, and his arms and legs stretched out, and very slowly. He started sniffing around like he could smell something, and wasn't taking any notice of us, the sand bath, or his food which he loves. He looked a bit like he had found a friend, but there was nothing new in there and everything was familiar. He is on his own at the moment after his mate passed away, so was nothing in the room that could have interacted with him. He was walking around very slowly and curiously like he had met a new friend, but as I said, there was nothing in there, he was also talking and squeaking to himself. There was no outside noise that could've set him off, so we don't know what could have caused this. Help??? x

How strange! Just out of interest, when was it that his mate passed away? If it was his first time out after his mate has gone, could he not have just caught his scent?

To me it seems that Scribble may have been spooked. They can hear at ultrasonic frequencies so you wouldn't have noticed. If he is OK in his cage and next time when he comes out, that's probably all it was.

I think it's prob as Fred said, spooked! I've had it before where for no apparent reason one of mine has done that. I call it 'the judder-walk', check for spiders and bugs around or in the cage too. Sometimes mine have heard a bird outside and freaked a bit, they just seem to react differently depending on their mood. They can have bad dreams too which can leave them shaken up (no I'm not crackers its true!). Its hard to pinpoint really but just give him lots of fuss and reassurance, maybe some treats and I'm sure he'll be fine. Poor scribble. :-(

Thanks everyone I think he may have picked up the scent of my friends guinea pig who has been around recently and got a bit confused. I don't think it was the birds outside because usually he has a nice (loud) chat with them XD put he probably got spooked.

Ah ha!!! That makes complete sense! Great sleuthing on your part, to recall and track that down.

Lol, guinea pigs are also Caviomorph rodents, so the smell may have made him stop and think "what's this?" lol, any unfamiliar smell can provoke a defence response like you describe.

oh dear Smux lol, damien is surely outmatched by a GP! I love guinea pigs, I really want a pair of abyssinian ones in the not too distant future, but you're right, a rabbit can bruise a humans ribs, never mind a guinea pigs or degus, which is why they can't be kept together.
